My daughter was tested for Red food coloring allergy and the test was negative. She has lots of allergies and is extremely allergic to Hunt's Manwich sauce and McDonald's cookies - so it isn't Red but something else in these food items.
My friend's son is allergic to Red food coloring and gets very hyper and stays awake for hours and hours.
There are quite a few people allergic to Red #5.
It is possible to be allergic to almost anything. The body recognizes the substance as different than "self" and thinks the substance is dangerous and mounts an all-out attack to get rid of the substance - one way or another.

It can be a real problem for those who are. You would not believe all of the things that have red dye in them. The cranky part sounds suspicious though. More likely would be a rash, hives or even a headache...I not sure I have ever heard of a food or food product making someone cranky.
Go round bacon, abooot, eh?, hockey, aboot, Loonies, eh?, doollars, Michael J. Fox, eh?

I've heard of it before. A friend of mine's girlfriend is highly allergic to Orange food coloring.. she breaks out in hives! So it's not completely unheard of!

It does happen- and unfortunately it happens more with some of the red colorings than others. Your friend will just have to be careful and read the ingredients listings on his food.

Read a book called "Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About" It talks about how the food industries are lying about additives (like food colorings) and preservatives being bad for you. How they make you fat, addicted to them, and sick. How studies have proven this and food and medical companies pay to keep the test results secret so we will keep buying the food that is killing us.
It is really shocking!!

Some people are, tell her to not get any tattoos with red in them either since most inks are so close to natural food dyes. ( at least in a good shop they will be).
Her skin will get infected and reject the red coloured part. ( I'm Canadian too eh?
