Try a Word-A-Day calendar or daily email service- they give you a word each day and then if you commit to using that word at least once in a sentence that day, you'll build up your vocabulary in no time!

Unfortunately there's no alternative to reading - books are words and so it would be logical to assume that new words would come from books. I have quite an extensive vocabulary and I consider this due to reading.

If the reason you don't want to read is because you find it boring maybe it's because you haven't found a genre that you like. You should put up a light bestseller down at your local bookstore and see where it leads you.

It also might be helpful to hang around on chatrooms where real discussion actually takes place - such as a poetry, science or politics channel. You'll be constantly encompassed by new language - and if you keep at it you'll find yourself picking up new words.
