First find the breed you want. Then find a breeder. Someone who knows about their breed, has screened against health problems and has home raised the pups. Even a shelter or breed rescue group, the only thing is you wont know your pups back ground, temperament or health issues. NEVER get a pet from a pet store or someone that sells many breed as a business.

There are some great dogs at the SPCA, animal shelter, or pound, if you prefer. Lovable, healthy, and if you've got your mind set on it, purebred dogs are widely available for practically nothing.
You can tell if the animal is healthy by looking at it most cases, and the folks that work there will give you great advice. They'll also hook you up with comparatively inexpensive access to all the shots your puppy is going to need.
Tell the world where you made your new friend, too. Save some lives.

The best place is a breeder, shelters spay and neuter at an early age so their dogs don't have a very strong immune system, plus some can be aggressive because of being abandoned. I would look in the classifieds in your local newspaper, and places around you they are not always breeders, but some have bought from breeders, and there are usually more pure breds, and at shelters there are more mixes.

Go to a kennel or the humane society. You will find a dog that is looking for someone to love it, I went to PAWS over a year ago and got myself a best friend. They give the dogs shots and fix them and what better place to go and give a pet a home

The best place to get a puppy or a dog is through any animal rescue organization. They are vet checked and have their shots already.

Please go to a shelter. They will love you forever and be so loyal. I have rescued many dogs from shelters. My last one died about a month ago at 14 and he is greatly missed and I'm hoping in a few months to save another one. It's always the way to go. Don't pay anyone when you can save something that will be a truly good friend and companion.

Pet Co. holds pet adoption every Saturday. And the good part about that is they were abandoned pets who need a new home. so it would basically be like saving a pet! I got a puppy about a month ago and he has the biggest heart!

Rescue group or SPCA. You save the lives of two animals that way - the one you take home, and the one that can be pulled from a shelter because the rescue group has space available again.

Your local animal shelter will set you up & you will be adopting a best friend. All kinds of dogs go into shelters, even pure breeds. I got my Pomeranian at the "pound".
