you make a trade with him: you get whatever it is you want now (power, riches, etc) and he gets you for eternity after you die (to torture you, be his slave, etc)

It is a rather foolish idea, as an occultist please allow me to explain.

The many people who try to sell their souls to the devil usually want something in return. Something so extreme the only thing they can exchange is their soul for the desired outcome. The mistake is once you recieve what the devil owes you, you in turn must give the devil your soul, having your soul, the devil can instantly decide things for you, like no longer needing the "gift" he gave you.

A common way around this is the soul bearer will state that satan may not aquire their soul for X amount of years. Even still this is beyond stupid, there is no way out of this contract.

Remember, in order to obtain something of equal value must be lost. This is the first rule of equivalent exchange.

Hails to the learned mind,

I am a Satanist. No one can sell their soul to Satan, He doesn't want or need souls. Satanists perform dedication rituals. Dedicated Satanists are born Satanists. Those who don't know anything about satanism speculate, and make explanations based on guesses and fear.

Only the biblegod demands your soul in exchange for a fabled afterlife in "heaven". The biblegod needs more souls to feed off of, so he sends his sheep out to convert and save anyone that they can force to listen.

The bedtime stories, and cinematic horrors involving Satan and pacts to obtain material wealth and power are nothing but stories.

According to the bible, the biblegod appreciates human sacrifices, murdered mass amounts of people, punished humans for obtaining intelligence, is insecure, allows his only child to be tortured and hung to die, and demands humans to relinquish their souls or else face uncertain suffering for all eternity.

So the real "devil" is the 'holy' god of the buybull. This answer should be appropriately directed to those that follow him.

...you know, the whole:

- "I'm too good to bow to God" mentality.
- "I'm here for a good time, not a long time; so just as well have some FUN while I'm here" mentality...

Simply: Because people believe they 'gain' something out of forfeiting their soul...Boy, are they mistakened!

I'll use this analogy to describe how IDIOTIC it is:

*the whole concept is like someone addicted to sex, who intends on having unprotected intercourse with another person who has AIDS, & every other STD going ---- Just because 'they think the sex would be great!'

(The person's head is NOT screwed on right....the same goes, for people who sell/forfeit their soul.)

The idea is ridiculous on several levels. Christianity's dogma says that the natural state of everyone born is to go straight to hell, unless the person believes that someone named Jesus died for his sins so that 'God' could intercede and change the destination on the ticket to "Heaven". Therefore, according to Christianity's principles, a person who believes in Jesus would be incapable of forfeiting his soul to "Satan". By even considering the idea of selling one's soul, the person would -- according to Christian ideas -- have already lost his soul to "Satan". Why would "Satan" pay for something he already owns?

Silly superstition, all of it.

If you sell your soul to the devil, you have to go to Hell. If you sell it to him he helps you do something, or makes people do something you want them to do.

Oh my God! Why would you ever think of this!!! God is going to get you for that.

Shheesshh ... all the anti-Christian bashing has gotten to me today.

But anyway, usually, it is a way for one to advance in the physical in exchange for their soul in a different realm.
