Want somewhere nice to go for a lively weekend... on the beach at night, good food and nice trendy places to drink in the evening...want somewhere more upmarket and not tacky tourist resort....

Except for the beach bit, I would recommend Madrid! They have a nice park though! And it depends when you are planning to go, as it gets VERY hot in the summer.
But it is very lively, and has a mass of good restaurants and trendy places, and also great architecture and history, and a lot of good art galleries, if that's your thing.

It's gotta be Barcelona. Stay on the Avenida de Gracias, it's more upmarket than some areas but really close to everything.

Not tacky, gorgeous beaches, lovely food, vineyards, restaurants.. :-)

Barcelona, for sure, got everything there, its vibrant, lots of bars, clubs, wonderful restaurants, great hotels, easy to get to, people are lovely and it has the beach.

BARCELONA IS THE BEST CITY EVER. i'm a new yorker and i gotta say while nyc is amazing, barcelona is just better. great nightlife, great art (really amazing) food, and the coolest people on earth. love ittt.
