Having read the responses to your question there are a few replies i have to agree with in part. However no-one has mentioned EPILESPY which is the first thing that i would consider given the limited details. Sleep Epilespy is very common. There are many forms of epilespy but all tend to fall into two groups. Temperal Lobe epilesy alson known as "Tonic Clonic" and Partial eplilepsy the first being the more serious of the two. Temperal Lobe epilesy induses seizures from that specific part of the brain. In these cases the seizure are more severe and render u in a state where u are basically unconscious for a period of approx 2 mins. During this time u experience myocloncic jerks and are completely unaware of what is going on around u. Alot of ppl suffuring from this type of epilesy come around somewhat dazed, tired and have an awful head-ache.
Patial seizures are different in the sense that u are aware of your surroundings either totally or in part. You suffer myoclonic jerks with as u put it make u "twich and shake".
You dont state how long this has been a problem however if u do have epilepsy there are many medications available (anti-convusants), I would definately look into the possibility that u may be suffering from "PARTIAL EPILESPY " and go and see your gp. as soon as possible. As these attacks happen during your sleep it would be a wise decisicion to take your G/F with you as she would beable to describle what actually happens during these episodes.
Your doctor should refer u to a neurologist who will give u test called an ECG. This test will determine that there is a high possibily u may be suffering from epilepsy or rule it out.
You will be asked various questions one of the most import being Have u or any of your family suffered from epilepsy as epilepsy can (not all the time be hereditory) . You may here the terms "Idiopathic - No known cause)" Hereditory i guess that speaks for itself and "Secondry Epilepsy" (Epilespy caused as the result of an accident or injury).
Please dont waste any time and make an appointment to see ur dr tomorrow first thing.. epilespy is a common condition although u may feel alone, 1 in every 10 ppl suffer from it with medication it can be controlled completely so u have no seizures as long as u continue to take your medication.
Should epilepsy turn out not to be the cause your doctor will investigate other causes to explain the symptoms u have mentioned.
I hope my response has been of help to u and wish u all the best.

It's called RLS - Resltess Legs Syndrome. You should probably go to the doctor for a proper diagnosis and maybe some medication if you are twitching while sleeping. I do the same. Sometimes, right when I am going to sleep, I will KNOW that I am dreaming, freak out, and wake up really scared. Then I do that again and again until I truely fall asleep. It's a very annoying disorder, so I really suggest going to the doc.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

you could suffer from a sleep disorder called REM behavior disorder. While in the 5th stage of sleep when you enter deep sleep, your body reacts sometime violently to what ever dream you are having, or it could be psychological, stressed out anxiety etc... as far as knowing whats going on around you when you sleep well thats just being half asleep, you are not fully asleep when that accours, however if in you dream you conciously know it is a dream and are aware, and also can controll you dream then it's call Lucid dreams: when you are aware you are dreaming but it seems very real.

Most of us have myoclonic jerks when we are falling asleep. Sometimes you can develop a twitching after an illness or if you are on medication. If you are concerned, go and see your GP.
If it is severe consider seeing a pediatric neurologist and getting a sleep study with overnight EEG recording.
It may be a sleep disorder that can be potentially treated with medications.

You could be uneasy or uncomfortable when you sleep and have a sleeping disorder. You may sleepwalk too. See your GP they could help or get you some councelling to deal with the trauma that makes you seem awake when your asleep.

I hope it is the latter
