We had dachshunds when I was a child. If I was choosing now, I'd go with the Golden Retriever. Small dogs have less reason for their existence, if you ask me. A dog should be a protective security guard for the family. A dachshund is just too small for that job, and they are not very brave, the way some small dogs are.

My brother has a Golden Retriever and the dog is highly inteligent and very loyal. I think the Golden Retriever is the best choice.

Alot of people pick golden because they are known for their stable temperaments. You should still do research on both breeds because Golden's are also full of energy and always on the go. Ask your self, do I want a big dog or smaller one. What are the health problems each breed can have. Can I afford to feed a big dog compared to a small one..................

For a small dog a Bichon Frise is the best. They don't shed and they are hypoallergenic. Talk about smart and loveable. I have a mini dach right now as well and have owend a yellow lab and a retriever. The retrievers are incredible dogs but you must have a backyard for them to run and play in at will. As for the dachshund, mine is very protective of me. He is quite loveable, BUT they love to chew everything. Even if you leave toys out for them they love furniture, carpets, walls, you name it. They should be kenneled when you leave or put in a small place. They feel secure in small places. They will sleep under the covers by your side at night. They are really cute. Check out a Bichon. Awesome!

That really depends on your personal preference, but I'd go with the Golden Retriever.
