OK, I do need details here. I am from California and have never really experienced a severe East Coast winter. I would like to know, for myself and my husband, exactly what we should wear so we feel the cold as little as possible. I would be grateful to know what kind of coat/hat/gloves/socks/bootsother items we will need, what exactly they are called, and where to shop to find them - i.e., what companies carry such winter clothes as mean business. The ones in California are simply laughable. We are going as tourists and we could really use the info to be able to enjoy our trip! No detail is too insignificant - we are babes in the woods here. Thanks a lot.

it can get pretty chilly in NYC in the winter... but around christmas its usually isnt too bad...
Cashmere will be your best friend... soft, lightweight, warm... a bit on the expensive side...

3/4 Wool Coat, Cashmere Scarf, Leather Gloves with lining, Earmuffs, merino or cashmere blend socks to keep your feet nice and warm... cableknit sweaters are pretty warm...
make sure your boots/shoes are nonslip... alot of people slip and fall on the ice here

pretty much everystore in NYC will carry winter clothing by the time fall comes around...

Those stores sell really good winter gear. I would reccomend a longer coat, whether its a bubble coat or pea coat, if it stops just above your knees, that'll help alot. A cashmere or wool coat. J. Crew has an option when you can line the coats with extra fabric to keep out the wind and cold, so yuo should look into that. I wear UGGs and leather boots during my winters here, however there are times when its fine to just wear regular shoes. Scarves, gloves, hats, all really good ideas, especially if your not used to the cold. It doesnt usually snow alot around Christmas, however if it does, I recommend getting a pair of Timberlands or flat boots.

Think about avoiding exposed skin. The winds can really can get brutual, so while the thermometer may say 30 degrees, it's 10 degrees with wind chill.

Coat, hat and gloves are a must - a scarf is a good idea. If isn't too cold, just drape it around you, but if the wind is really going, you can protect your face.

The best advice: Dress in layers. Keeps in heat and can be removed when you get indoors.

Wow that is alot of detail you want.
I would say that you want to dress very warmly, especially if you are used to California weather, you should still expect to be cold. Also bring nice "dressy" clothes, many of the nicer restaurants expect a man to wear a jacket and the lady to be presentable.
Also, if you want to enjoy the City, try not to stand out as tourists, ordering frou frou drinks in bars and asking Taxi drivers silly questions brings out the worst in New Yorkers.
Have fun!

Good question, I live in a discrete portion in NY and snow really doesn't occur in CA but anyways, you should get some comfortable boots because when it snows, the snow accumulates to some degree. You might want to get a beanie hat, they're awesome. I like wearing a neck gaiter, it gives warmth to my neck. Gloves, any gloves are fine as long as they provide warmth to you fine ladies. I like wearing down jackets, they're really helpful. North Face sells some nice winter accessories. They sell gloves, neck gaiters, down jackets, and much more. Socks? I'd prefer long-socks therefore when you step into the snow, ice won't freeze the lower portion of your feet. Depends how you want to dress in NY, no one really cares because it's who you are but I prefer a down jacket, any would be fine, a scarf, some beanie hat, jeans/sweats, and boots, I forgot what they're called though, they're pretty fancy. Hm, sorry if I didnt' help much, I don't know the names of the items. :T Best of luck! Enjoy your trip to NY! Visit Manhattan, it's great, I live in Queens so yeah.

By Christmas in NY it hardly ever snows.

You can get around with a cashmere sweater and a nice wool coat.
Gloves are a must because the cold does dry your skin a lot because of the constant wind and dry heat inside buildings. Chapstick and lotion.

i'm certain you already own jeans, deliver 'em. you may want to deliver outfits that you'll be able to layer. once you've lengthy sleeved shirts, you could deliver those to boot. it will be chilly the following for the time of X-mas time yet no longer frigid. because you stay in Texas, you received't have the capacity to purchase some thing hotter than that till you get the following. you'll desire a coat, some sweaters, gloves, a headband and a hat. attempt shops like always 21. they're low in cost.

Just wear couple of layers (as warm as you want to). New York City is not as cold as the rest of the state. Also, keep hats and gloves handy. You want to protect your ears and hands because sometimes it might gets windy.
