I know exactly where you are talking about. It is pretty affordable. You'd be surprised but there are a lot of really affordable places on the upper east side and in the east village as well. It the prices are the same, I'd stick with the upper east side, it is safe and a really nice neighborhood. Though the other neighborhoods might have a better night life, in the end it's where you have to live and I don't think the trade-off is worth it. Midtown west is the UGLIEST neighborhood in Manhattan, I would have to say... Try this site, I've known a lot of people who've used it and found some great deals. You just have to sift through some scams I suppose. Like they'll post something just to hook you and then they show you something else, but overall you can find some GREAT deals, if you're willing to go through the inconvenience.

You mentioned Chelsea and the Village in your question which are both very expensive neighborhoods. For a downtown neighborhood you can still find some deals in the East VIllage and Chinatown. You may also want to consider Harlem. Otherwise, Brooklyn, Queens and even New Jersey are good bets. Still in all, many people moving from other areas often get "sticker shock" wheh they see the prices of New York City rentals. I would suggest you explore a few websites to familiarize yourself with what to expect.

You won't find a decent priced apartment in Manhattan. Unless, of course, you want to live in a studio the size of a closet. The best idea would be to find roommates. If you're on a really tight budget, you should maybe try Queens or Brooklyn. Even though they're areas outside of where people typically think a New Yorker lives, they're good for people on a budget.

First of all, there is no such place called Chelsea Village. It is either Chelsea or West Village on the Westside.

Do your own "homwork" so you can negotiate a better deal and check these sites out:

Manhattan is quite expenisive. You may want to consider some of the other boroughs, Brooklyn or Queens or the Bronx. You may be able to afford a small piece of suburbia if you checked Westchester. It is the next county above the BRonx and you can take the commuter train, Metro North into the city. Manhattan rents for a nice place are upwards of 2500 a month. Try another borough..

The village is very, very expensive unless you have money. they are also very small unless you want to live in a closet next to crackheads. The best places to look are not going to be downtown because they are often very expensive and not always the nicest of neighborhoods, especially if you are not familiar with NYC. I would recommend looking at the Upper West side. Its a nice part of the city and alot of people live here. Around 95-112th street on west end and broadway are nice and much cheaper.

The least expensive areas in Manhattan are Inwood, Hudson Heights -- way up North of Harlem. Also, Jersey City and Hoboken in New Jersey are a short commute and have cheaper apts.

everybody has said it already. if you want to live in manhattan anywhere south of like 90th street (which most certainly included chelsea and the village), then have thousands of dollars of month to spend on rent and utilities OR find a broom closet and lots of roommates. otherwise hit queens or brooklyn and even there you will pay at least $1000 a month for a studio apt in the decent areas. welcome to nyc.

ny city has 5 boroughs, all of that are managed by using a similar city authorities, less than the mayor. each and every borough has its own borough president also. long island isn't the "significant" borough, yet numerous the city authorities is positioned there. The boroughs are long island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. There are also islands that are component to the city, like Roosevelt Island, it truly is taken under consideration component to ny County, which incorporates long island.
