I don't think you can change it for free unfortunately. I changed my sons surname from his dads back to mine for about £35-40, all legal and binding, on the internet through here:-

http://www.deedpoll.org.uk/

I still have his original birth certificate as you dont get issued with a new one, you just get a form that says his name has been legally changed, which I keep with his birth certificate.

Good luck :)

In Britain a deed poll is only a declaration that you wish to be KNOWN by a different name, the birth certificate will stay with the same name. There is only one circumstance where another certificate will be issued and that is if the original certificate was "father unknown" then subsequently the father signs a paternity declaration. I'm afraid in your circumstances it cannot be changed. You can however call your baby by whatever name you choose by using the deed poll.

I know you can change the first name within 12 months (it says so on the back of the child's birth certificate, through the registrar, but for the surname, I am not sure. I know its your personal decision, but I am somewhat curious why you'd want to do such a thing? Is anybody questioning the paternity, or are you intending to leave the child's dad, or...? Sorry, I am not judgemental, just wondered why the change of hearts? In fact why don't you change it to both of your surnames, it would be nice.

You'll have to get it before a judge. It takes a court order to change it once it's on the birth certificate. If the father is in agreement, though, it shouldn't be a big deal.

In Scotland, Ask your local Registry office for the info leaflet about Statuatory Decleration

In England, same place but the leaflet you want is Deed poll

In America, If memory serves, you need a lawyer.

You need to check with your county registrar. They are the ones who hold your daughters birth certificate. It is my understanding that once the birth certificate is created that is your name unless you change it through a court process.

I dont think you can do this actually on her certificate.....but there is no reason why you cant change her name through a solicitor.....if you are or were married to the childs father then you will have to get permision to do this.
