Q-tips and some mineral oil or ear cleaner.
Dip the Q-tips in the oil and clean out the cats ears. The ear canal forms a 90 degree angle, so you can stick the Q-tip in pretty far to get the ****.

You have to be very careful. First, I would suggest a trip to the vet and have him show you how. Also, if you see small coffee ground stuff in the kitty's ears, you should definitely take him to the vet because he might have ear mites and once they take hold, it is very difficult to correct the problem. A swab dipped in Mineral oil or a solution you can buy at a pet store can be used very gently around the ear but be very, very careful not to go in deep. Just a moist cotton ball will also do the trick. Your local pet store can give you some literture or advise on keeping the cat's ears clean.

I use q-tips and rubbing alcohol or mineral oil depending upon what kind of dirty they are. If it is ear mites then I would use both and get the medicine from the vet. Ear mites makes the cats ears smell really bad and mineral oil is a temporary fix.

My husband cleans our cats ears by taking his knuckle and rubs it around in their ears. They must like it because they lick the wax that gets on his knuckle and want him to do it more! We do get the cats' ears cleaned whenever something happens that might have us take them to the vet also.

The safest thing is mineral oil and q-tip, to clean out earmites, for example. Don't go too far in there - just the folds. Good luck holding the cat down!

The common q-tip works great. If your cat has ear mites though you will need to get ear drops for them.

Plain bottled water and cotton ball. Kitty's skin is VERY sensitive, so be extra gentle. Never use detergents or alcohol or peroxide, etc. You cat will thank you and even look forward to these grooming sessions.

Mineral oil and cotton balls. They don't like it, but if you're gentle it should be fine. And they will look funny until they clean it up but the oil doesn't hurt them.
