depends. when you call thedoctor or a store you don't want to hear 'hello' - businesses usually identify the business and the person and say something like how may i help you or how may i direct your call. if you speak a differernt language then hello might not be it.
if you are sharing the phone, you have to work it out. some people like to be cool or fancy, so that's fine. trust me they will change to 'hello' when they are trying to get a job.

I like the European way--they say-- hello this is Mary Jones to whom am i speaking. But then they are much more polite then we are. So I guess Hello is OK

Just don't say--YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA , or Watch Want?

The proper greeting could be something like...........

"" Hi there, this is Larry, can I help you? ""

Too often I have heard ""DAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"" or the likes.
