Handyman I like the question..
I'm not a pilot first off, No license yet. I have jumped out of more planes than I have ever landed in. That said I have been learning flying VFR and IFR for the past 6 years, LOL well all I need to do is PAY I guess now and take the test, But why? I don't fly that much, never alone, I don't have a plane, don't have to insure anything, have no hanger rental fees, I don't have to pay for annuals, so I'm just a bum, wow that was enlighten.....
I work for a Local GA airport we have an international airport and 3 GA's, I Know many people that fly and many that have planes and I have never seen fly in over 8 years. It is costly, and yes with the price of fuel going up it is more so. But the people I see most flying are Clubs, Members in the clubs going on weekenders and week long trips. from 2001 to 2004 there was a slow down in persons learning to fly, 2005 2006 both have picked up to almost pre 9/11 stats. The new Cirrus R22's are the caddies of the sky right now and those things are flying all the time around me.
I wish all Blue Sky's, and safe Landings

the obtrusive answer is lacking.....%. a nighttime with an finished moon once you've a determination of nights. in case you finally end up happening a nighttime with a sparkling moon, it is gonna get genuine, genuine darkish even as that very last city for 100 miles passes below the nostril. once again, an finished moon is major in case you're a VFR pilot. interior the united kingdom, pilots must have an device score to fly after darkish. You did not supply the point of your journey notwithstanding it appears like you probably do not have a lot, so supply this flight some severe idea and attempt to get it in before darkish. maximum critically, have the capacity to do a 100 and eighty degree turn on the contraptions. an finished moon may make a x-u . s . at nighttime a breeze.

I flew about a half dozen times after I received my private and I haven't flown since (at least not as PIC). One thing that has contributed to me not flying more often are the hastles of insurance checkrides to rent with a new company. I've relocated since I flew last and finding a new club or FBO to rent from is just a pain. Plus staying current is a pain as well. If I've only done 3 touch and goes in the last year I do not feel comfortable going up alone.

It wasnt shortly after, but I backed off flying for 8 months. I am also an aircraft owner, and still am. I got spooked because I was involved in a bad weather crash. Embedded Level 5 thunderstorms, winds in excess of 50kts, took a friend and I down a little over a year ago in florida. Fortunatly, we walked (ran) away. My bud ended up with a hip injury, I was a little beat up but needed no medical followup. This is as much detail as I will post in public.

I didn't stop flying for a long time. Got my private in 2000 and flew four or five times a week until I graduated from college in 2002. I instructed in the summer of 2002, but needed to get a job that actually paid money. I did that, and couldn't afford to fly myself anymore. I still work in the industry (airlines, not GA) though, so it's not so bad.

Of course, I've had quite a few studenst who get or start their private and never fly again.

I was one of the lucky ones... I found someone to pay for my flying but it was anything but "free"... especially when people were shooting at me.
