We are finding ourselves a babysitter. For a while we've had friends watch our son for a short time, but now we need someone who can watch him for a while. What kind of questions would you ask them? I know to ask their age, what their rate is and what certifications they have (like red cross) and things like that. What else would you ask?

We have put our name on a list at our local youth center on a Air Force base. We are looking for what kind of questions you would ask someone if they are to watch your child?

Well, since this person will be watching the most precious being in your life (or at least one of them), you should ask things like...

References - Who have they worked for in the past, may you contact them to confirm and to see how they liked your service?

Have you worked with a child of my gender/age/attitude before? It's good to establish because sometimes people have only worked with one gender, or only a specific age, or only children that are rowdy/calm.

What sorts of situations have you found yourself in while babysitting in the past that were a challenge or caused you concern, what experiences did you find that you really enjoyed? I know that this question sounds odd, but it may be helpful to find out what level of situation is a challenge to them, how they handled it, and what sort of situations that they consider a bonus, and why.

Other than that, the main thing I would go by is instinct. If they don't feel right, follow that feeling and don't choose them.

Love as always,

Sebastian

give them scenarios and have them give you in depth answers.
Also call your county dept for children services or your school district for leads on registered certificated sitters. excellent resources are church members, coworkers and friends.
If you want to find out if any certificated provider has ever had a complaint you just call the registry and they will pass you a # to call. if you live in Riverside county, CA. one # is 760)863-3345
Boys & Girls Clubs of America take children who have just completed their Kindergarten year.
Good Luck!

well i work with kids a lot and i think that it is important to see if they have any experience at first!! also older people are usually better.. so ask for their age. Also try going to ur local daycare and see the people there. see who ur kids like. you should also ask if thye have a car to their own expense. go on ur gut instincts. these are your kids and they deserve the best.

I'd ask about their religious and social attitudes, and their consumption habits. This person is going to have plenty of influence over your children.

Ask for recommendations from other's they have sat for and follow up and actually talk to the parents, to see what she is like.
