What do you think of the name "Abner" for a baby boy? We are considering it and were wondering what it evokes. How do you respond to the name? Is it totally ridiculous? normal? cute? ugly?

Hey, I was looking for reactions, but unfortunately some of the incredulous responses are less than constructive. If you don't like it, please try to tell me what you don't like about it. That's what helps me make a decision. I get the picture, though.

*rolls eyes* Ignore all the ridiculous comments others have made. The people who have said it's old etc, really need to stop being so narrow-minded, we don't all want to name our children Nevaeh Sparkly Princess and Hunter McButch Killer.

Anyway, to answer your question, I ADORE THIS NAME! I have two sons, and my husband and I considered it both times, and the only reason we didn't use it, is it didn't work so well with our surname.

I slightly prefer the original Hebrew form, Avner, but I still adore Abner!

It's a wonderful name, some people have no taste!

I'm torn -- it's cute & unusual, but then again it's kind of old fashioned. It makes me think of the old comic strip L'il Abner -- I don't know if I've ever actually seen the comic strip, but I know there was one named that. For that reason, it makes me think of something old fashioned & sort of silly. You should Google "L'il Abner" and see if the association is too random or if you would think about it later and ask yourself "oh, whyyyy...."

When it comes right down to it, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks -- just what you & baby's mom think. :-) Good luck & enjoy your baby!

Edit: I read your edit. See? It kinda hurts feelings when you open yourself up to other people's opinions on something so personal. This is why I say, it has to come down to the opinion of you & baby's mom. That way, once you show beautiful baby to people, they're not going to be gutsy enough to object. It's only before that people spout off. So forget what other folks say & choose a name that you & Mom think suits your baby. My children have unusual names & I couldn't care less what anyone says. Good luck to you for a happy, healthy baby! :-D

Abner sounds sortof like a exercise machine that will work your abs. Or like a really old fashion name...the way this world is nowadays, I think your little boy would get made fun of for his name. They may call him Abby for short, like a girls name. It all depends on how you think the name will effect him.

Li'l Abner was a hilly-billy cartoon character who was always acting thick and stupid. If any of the other kids at school get to know this, your little Abner will have the mickey taken out of him something rotten. What is your next best..............

No offense- but that's awful. The only Abner I've ever heard of is Jules Abner. IT's different but I think you should keep looking. You don't want your son's nickname to be "Abby"

I think of Lil' Abner, the hillbilly from the "Snuffy Smith" cartoon. Sorry, but it sounds backwoods and unedumucated.

Well there's Lil Abner the comic strip character.
Otherwise, it sounds like someone's old Jewish uncle.
Sorry, it's just not doing it for me.

I recall it being the name of the pig on the old show on nick "Hey Arnold"

In the best interest of the kid growing up with the name like that getting picked on and such i wouldn't recommend it
