i'm a trumpet performance major starting my sophomore year of college. i've been playing tpt for about 9 years and piano for about 12 years. i'm leaving on a trip to europe for 29 days next summer and am stressing out over how to keep my lips/hands in shape. on previous travels, i have brought my mouthpiece with me. is this the only solution?

You should be able to bring your trumpet on the plane without paying any extra fees. It can be your carry on bag. You do not have to pay extra because the trumpet is small. If you had cello or a tuba, that's a different story.

As for piano, you'll be fine, just go and travel and have fun. Don't worry about practicing. Your chops will be fine. Enjoy and immerse yourself in the culture of the countries you visit. You will learn more about music by exploring than by practicing. A trip like this will open up your creativity and explore your soul. Your musical abilities will improve because of what you see. Don't worry about practicing. Trips are for relaxation. You can always get back into shape quickly.

When I went to Europe to perform, i practiced one day before the performance, the rest of the tour I visited as many sites as possible. I learned more from the experience than anything else and it's a trip I continually remind myself when I'm practicing. It will blow your mind and change the way you make music.

I was a trombone major, and took my horn on the plane all the time. I had to check it as luggage, but never had a problem. We even did an international trip in college, all our instruments were just checked luggage. Check with your carrier, of course, but I see no reason why your trumpet can't be checked.

Piano's another story....I'd check into seeing if there's some kind of practice facility where you'll be.

Don't stress over a trip you're going to take next summer though! You've plenty of time to find a solution. Have fun!

Yes you can bring your trumpet with you. You just need to pay an extra money for it. Unfortunately, you definitely cannot bring your piano.

In that case you need to do more mental study, and maybe, over a flat surface, you can practice your fingering.

That helps I play piano too.

If they don't let you take your instruments on board its probably because they're too big and would take a lot of place so try to send your instrument(s) as cargo
