Sadly, most folks don't even know which end bites!!!

*ANY* new fad sweeps through like a plague & becomes"My friend's cousin's boyfriend's neighbor's GRANNY has one! So there!"

SO...AGAIN...THERE'S NO SUCH THING!!!

People are TOTALLY ignorant of BASIC info. about dogs, let alone the esoterics of BREED STANDARDS!!! They don't even know there are such!!!
Well,EVERY recognised breed HAS A STANDARD!!! Go to the AKC SITE & READ UP!!
Don't get ripped-off/CONNED/SCAMMED by ANYTHING that says"TINY,TOY,IMPERIAL,TEACUP -OR- RARE( as in color)" !!!! ALL scam terms.

Becky,it's "really hard to tell.." BECAUSE THERE'S NO SUCH THING! OK?

The only way to know and this is not 100% is to buy locally with access to breeding facilities. View the parents and grandparents if possable. I breed Chihuahua's and frequently run into unethical breeders who will actually withhold food to prevent a future breeder from growing. So when they reach adulthood they are very tiny. This doesnt garantee a tiny offspring but is effective in convincing buyers that their puppy will not grow and will get them to pay triple what a dog is really worth. I dont breed tiny dogs for this reason. They arent even allowed to participate in the show ring. That size is a disqualification. That is not to say that you cant find one that is really a tiny dog but its not as likely as the above scenerio might be. Your better off finding the small end of the standard for that breed. You will run in to less health issues and may have your dog a few years longer. Good luck

I want to add to an above post. There is a toy standard in the AKC. It is the only discriptive size allowed as in Standard Poodle as apposed to Toy poodle. Both are poodles but there is a differance in size and they are both registered breeds. But it is only a discriptive word. All small breed dogs are considered toys. Thats why they are called a toy breed.
Yes you are right on the other size discriptions. These are just words to describe a dog and should not be used to pass it off as a separate standard within a breed.

You'd be better off to avoid any breeder who claims to have Teacup Maltese for you, unless you like to throw away your money. A good breeder will also offer health guarantees, support in case of a problem (behaviour or physical), and should have a clause in your contract (if they don't have you sign a contract, leave) that if you can't keep the dog for whatever reason, that they will take it back. Good breeders may also have adult dogs that couldn't find good homes or were returned due to allergies, moving to no-pet housing, etc, and they have the advantage of being past the puppy-phase, often being cheaper, and still being cute. I have a 2 yr old Maltese X and people are always calling him a puppy--and he's bigger than standard!

If you do not check a company before entering into a transaction, you could lose your money, time and credibility. Some widely used resources are the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and the national fraud center (www.fraud.org) these days, you can easily find out more about a company using the internet in a few minutes. From a company's website, you can details about its ownership, how old the company really is and feedback from the company's customers.

How do you know what's a rip off? Read the breed standard and see if the dog matches it. Or better yet, find a breeder that actually shows their dogs and has titled dogs.

its a money making scam....any respecting person would call them runts...with all the health problems a runt may have...but give them a fancy name like teacup or imperials mini standard and folk think they are getting something special and willing to pay over the odds....a fool and its money are soon parted....
