Some say it is a part of ones culture or just something that has always been done. Others say it is another way to "money grub" or get money from guests.

No... Every wedding I've been to has one and it's fun to dance with the bride and groom!

It is part of my culture to have the dollar dance at weddings--it came for the "old country". Nowadays, I think it is commonplace because people like the idea of getting extra money from the guests. I have asked friends who have done this at their weddings if this is a part of their culture--and most have told me no but they saw it at a wedding and liked the idea. Now it is considered tacky because it is seen as sneaky. That's a shame because it is a lovely thing when there is tradition attached to it.

I don't consider it tacky at all. Those that want to participate do and those that don't, don't. I think it's a good way for the guests to give a little extra for the honeymoon without overextending themselves. Personally, everytime I've participated in a dollar dance I always give 5 or 10. It's just for fun, but if the bride and groom don't want to do it, then I say no.

I've been a several weddings with the dollar dance. Only one wedding sticks out in my mind as being tacky, and it wasn't the dollar dance that did it. It can be fun and cute, its a tradition in some cultures. And how cheap are you if you don't put a dang dollar on a dress? It's up to the bride (and her mother) and groom.!!!

I don't know about a dollar dance per se, but there are cultures where, as part of the traditions, guests pay to have a dance with the bride. It really isn't the money that counts, but the custom.

I hate the dollar dance. "Even though you've come to celebrate the special day and probably already bought a wedding present, come pay to dance with the person who invited you!" If people want to give monetary gifts at the wedding they will put it in a card, not pin it to the bride's veil or slip it in the money purse, which are two of the most hideous wedding ideas ever created!

I didn't do the dollar dance at my wedding - we had a pinata for all the kids that came to the reception instead. The dance is just a tradition of toasting the bride and groom and giving them a little something to "start off with" because before people lived together before marriage and such, the couples didn't start off with much to their names . . . it is just something that has begun to fade . . . although I wouldn't call it tacky, it just isn't needed much these days

Tacky, but much better then the "dollar lap dance".

It is up to the bride and groom whether they want to do it. Since it can be viewd as tradition I don't think its too bad to do if that is what you want.

What IS tacky is inviting people you don't want to come just so you can get gifts from them.
