If you are not a citizen and are married to a USA citizen that will not get you citizenship. You must file to get a green card and then apply for citizenship. Go down to you local/town government office and get all the forms there. If your visa runs out, even though you are married to an american you will still have to leave the country so don't let it expire!

For a permanent residency visa based on spouse it will costs you about $1300. The American half of this couple has to show 3 years of residency by showing 3 tax returns with an income above the federal poverty level. For a family of 2 the breadwinner has to have $15,500 annual gross. As soon as the Dept. of Homeland Security (former INS) accepts the paperwork the residency is as good as done. It may take another 18 months to get the official paperwork all completed.

However, you can't work. That takes a Green Card. Get in line like everybody else. They give priority to nurse-related and au pairs workers.

Citizenship takes even longer.

In each case, you are better off using the services of a lawyer specialized in this. The Dept. of Homeland Security has many forms for you to fill out and return with a certified money order. Just messing up once can make you start the whole process over again. Each packet they send you will be a new discovery and another fee. A lawyer ( and I'm not a lawyer, I'm not trying to sell you anything ) knows the whole process.

Marriage does not confer citizenship. Only years of legal permanent residency plus a lot of other processes will do that. Here is everything you need to know about naturalization (becoming a US citizen):

Look up information on becoming a citizen. Is this person already a resident alien, if not...that might be easier.
