My youngest children are 3 and 2. My husband wants to buy a dog. I'm uncertain. Which dogs have the best personality and are considered gentle?
Thanks!

Definitely golden retrievers. Golden retrievers are a gentle, loving dog and are good with children.

While breed has a lot to do with it how much time you invest in the dog can be the biggest deciding factor.
I have a Husky mix (large breed) and a two year old (not so gentle breed) and my pup is very good with him. I attribute her formal obedience training when she was a puppy, and the dedication her last owners gave her in reinforcing that training.
She's very good with him but I know that breed usual isn't so forgiving when a screaming two year old tries to ride them like a pony.
I'd research breeds pretty closely, and if you go the route of buying a dog (all my animals came from city shelters) don't stop your research at just the breed- look at the seller too. The sweetest breed can be very dangerous if the breeder you bought the dog from was irresponsible and crossed blood lines a lot to make a few fast extra bucks.
Make sure there are plenty of references that span all of the breeder's selling career. Not just new buyers but old ones, and hopefully ones that saw their puppy die of old age.
That will give you a good idea on the overall effort the breeder has devoted to ensuring the bloodlines are pure.

I would recommend a short-haired mix breed puppy. You'll have a completely different gene pool that shouldn't have any problems that are associated with interbreeding or the physical problems that pure bred dogs can pass from generation to generation. If you insist on a pure-bred dog, then a Jack Russell Terrier should be good, because it has alot of personality and loves to play. Also labs, and shepards are good. I wouldn't recommend a collie, although they're known as gentle dogs, they have to have constant care with all their hair, plus you'll eliminate any potential allergy problems with the kids. A chihuahua isn't a good dog for small kids, because they usually get attached to one person, and can be rather snappy. Best of luck to you.....

Go to dogs shows and talk with the breeders. There are many dogs that are great with small children, but that is not the end of the match. You need to think about your lifestyle and energy level and get a dog to match. Breeders love to talk about the pros and cons of the breed. If you want to adopt they can point you to rescues as well. Take your time you are going to be entering a relationship that can last 10 to 18 years.

I adopted my german shepherd when she was two and my son was three. Within three weeks of living with us, she alerted me several times that he was crying and needed me, would lay across the top of the stairs so he couldn't accidentally fall, and estabilshed a "perimeter" in the yard for him (even though I was right there all the time anyway). She always saw him as her responsibility until the day she died (by then he was almost 14). My daughter has already decided the only dog she'll have when she has kids is a shepherd. And I agree. Good luck with your decision - I'm sure it will be a great pooch!

Ausies are a hearding group and will tend to nip, as do poodles and some other small dogs.Shelties(like collies but smaller) Are great for little kids.Avoid fragle dogs like whippets or doxies.Umm rottwieer especialy females are VERY maturanal(I've had three that have all been so loving to kids)Labs are very sweet and easiy trained.Westies/scotties are pretty good to(i have one), and then theres always a good old fasion mutts.

Personaly I would go for a rott or a sheltie, ive had both(1 sheltie 3 rotts) and they have been outstanding with children, my one rott even adopted my kitten!Good luck and happy hunting.

No canines will be one hundred% secure with small toddlers. it fairly is why toddlers ought to under no circumstances be left unattended with any canines. Even one it fairly is socialized can chew in the adventure that they are mistreated by using a teenager, which incorporates having ears pulled etc. Small breeds or toy breeds honestly chew more effective often than large canines. the adaptation is that nip from a chihuahua or pomeranian gained't reason existence threatening injuries. I had acquaintances who's moms and dads owned a pit bull mixture and the canines grabbed their 2 twelve months old daughter interior the proper and face, fairly only a snap. This newborn is 10 now and has had to have numerous surgical procedures, and nonetheless has a terrible scar from one cheek for the length of her face to the scalp. My sister's shih tzu bit a baby who teased her interior the face and the outcome changed into 3 stitches to the lip. similar type of chew, completely different effects by using scale of the canines in contact. also, you won't be able to easily declare (case in point) german shepherds are sturdy with toddlers. canines have different personalities, so it relies upon on the canines. This is going for any breed.

Cavelier King Charles Spaniel, I grow up with them and they are all so easy so gentle so friendly always happy and good size. I never ever in my life met one that bit someone. Our first CKCS was a female though that warned us to keep distance but never ever bit, it was all show off. They barely need any training besides the common training every dog needs. My current dog enjoys dogtraining and flyball, his mother made it to the national flyball team.

Of course depends on where you live, but here they are cheap in purchase (without registration) to expensive for better pedigree dogs, but in America they are not very common and for that matter may be expensive. But they will be giving back so much love.

Greyhounds are very gentle dogs, and are great with children!!! They are also very quiet and rarely bark. They are very loving and sweet and love to be around people. They actually don't need any more excersize than a regular dog, and a brisk walk everyday should be fine. Also, if given acess to a yard, they will often excersize themselves! If you can, rescue one from a greyhound rescue center near you!
