A dog comes into full adult hood at 2 years of age, that is the ideal time to begin whelping. Five years for a large breed dog like a rotti, whose typical life span is around 10 years, is not recommended for breeding. However, it is likely, provided her health is good, she would be ok for breeding but the pups on the other hand may not thrive. Puppies born to older dams are at higher risk for immune system problems, and older females are at higher risk for problems like pyometria, low milk production, friable uterine lining, etc.

In the end however, is it really adding to the rotti breed to breed your dog? And more importantly, if something goes wrong and you lose your dog, will you be able to live with the fact you made a decision for her that was not in her best interest?

Well you have to remember.Birthing cost a lot of money and you have to take your dog into the vet a couple times while shes preggers. You also have to have homes for these new puppies and all the supplies. Also rotties are a larger brred and live less time, so she may still be going into heat but you can be putting some serious stress on her that may affect how long she lives.I would take her into the vet and have her checked up if the vet Okays it then you can .

No it's not too late, but why now? I would take the female to a vet and have her given a thorough check up and tests first.... She needs to be checked for worms, heartworms and any other common tests. Dogs with worms have pups with worms, they are born weak and often die just of the parasites before one knows they have them.

If you havent done so already, start her on high maintenance foods and table scraps, specially fresh meat, hopefully organically grown, hormone free chicken.. vegetables are also healthy for the mother to be, might have to be chopped up and added to the meat in shreds... Make her exercise enough to keep her muscles in shape and a little extra bone meal or plain bones for muscle tone and a strong heartbeat. (calcium helps the muscles function for a fast and trouble free delivery.)

If the vet became into propose to her it is totally comprehensible. initiate making random journeys to the vet. Take your rottie in and function her seem around. provide her a manage and function the vet pop out and meet her. canine in many circumstances affiliate the vet's place of work as some thing undesirable. So initiate taking your canine over there, provide her a manage and puppy her, then go away. She'll get used to the vet and the section. and he or she'll stop freaking out every time she is going to the vet's place of work; she won't assume that as quickly as she is going to the vet it is not exciting.

Does your dog have AKC papers and has she championed out, if not you are going to be disappointed if you think people will stand in line for the puppies. Backyard breeders, people you have a dog and breed without showing and championing out the dog, are one of the main reasons many dog breeds have genetic problems. Responsible breeders only breed champions who are breed type, and have been checked out for health problems. Please reconsider breeding your dog, the shelters are full of unwanted rottweilers.

It would be a more risky pregancy, but it isn't impossible. You'd need more regular check ups by the vet which = more $$. Talk to an expert and see what the pros and cons are.

Oh, please people!!! 5 years old is just into true maturity for a Rottweiler. It's the equivalent of a human woman waiting until she's 30.
