I'm a Political Science grad student, and I've done a good bit of research in the fields of human rights and political repression, so I've become somewhat acquainted with the Dirty War. Some of the aftermath of which is well portrayed in La historia oficial. Also as a film, it doesn't lose the personal story of the characters for the sake of making a political point, and I like that. And that it was made so soon after just gives it such a punch.
I never said it was a feel-good movie, though. :)

Just a weird observation... when I asked this question in the movies section, María llena eres de gracia didn't come up once. But there are several people here who have mentioned it... strange.

Since I'm fluent in four languages, I have fun watching foreign movies in their original language. I totally loved "Diarios de motocicleta" and "Mar adentro". "Y tu mamá también", too, it was fun. In Italian, a movie that I liked was "Il postino" (I believe it's "el cartero de Neruda" in Spanish). Oh, and "La vita è bella". In French, I'd go with "Amélie", "Camille Claudel" (I'm an art student) and "Au revoir les enfants".

I liked Y Tu Mama Tambien and Maria Full Of Grace, they were pretty cool movies. I have Amores Perros, which is supposed to be a really good movie - but the subtitles don't work, and I hardly know enough Spanish to comprehend whats going on.

Das Boot (German), no competition, and the German original with subtitles is far superior to the dubbed version. You miss the point of some important scenes with the dubbed version. The Passion of the Christ (Hebrew, Aramaic, Latin) is good, but the Latin pronunciation is Italian-based and not authentic for the first century AD. Dances with Wolves (Lakhota, English) is also well-done as is Black Robe (Algonquin, Mohawk, English).
