There are many choices...

Sliding panels, *vertiglides (*vertical honeycomb shades), sheer vertical shadings, etc. Also, it is very popular to use two horizontal shades for patio doors. One over each section of the sliding door. In regards to the heavy traffic, there are even faux wood vertical blinds that give you the look of wood while being very durable and easy to clean.

I am a little biased since I work for this company. But I think that we have many good options to use instead of plain vertical blinds. I will provide a link below to our "Vertical Blind Alternatives" page. I hope this helps. Good luck and happy shopping.

i resolved this problem by building a valance box above the doors, putting in a piece of pvc pipe held by pole holders (the kind for closets) bought coordinating fabrics ,1 to cover the box also used some batting to give it body (however painting it would work ) next made one curtain and sewed shower curtain rings to the top of it put it on the pvc and was done . just make sure you put the pole holders high enough so the shower rings don't show! but they do make it slide very easily. homedepot or lowes will cut every thing for you.just bring your measurements.also you can use store bought tab top drapes and attach the rings to the tabs hope this helps it was a pretty simple and inexpensive project good luck.

You could look at a home improvement store for a window treatment that goes on like contact paper but is semi transparent and often has very pleasant designs such as leaves and flowers. This will give your windows the look of stained glass and cut down on the harshness of the sun. It also keeps nosy passers by from having a clear view into your home.

You can purchase what is called a low E (energy) plastic film which comes in a roll and stick it onto the glass of your door. Home Depot and Lowes sell it. It works great because I used it on my door and it's been there for a year. It cuts down on the amount of heat and sunlight that comes through and offers a little privacy.

Check out a store that has a patio door section. They will have blinds that fit just the window part of your patio door. These blinds are hung at the top and bottom so they don't move.

I agree, vertical blinds are quite evil.

I have the same problem, and I have found that even if you dont like vertical blinds, its best if you keep them pulled back to where the door track ends. [like where the door is at its widest].

Just do this during the day and close them at night.

The make horizontal blinds and they work great, just don't get the one's that have fabric or you will not be able to keep it clean in the kitchen.

The only thing you could try is tinting the windows.

pick out a pretty decorative pole.Buy some curtain panels not too lightweight.Attach decorative hooks the same color as the rod.Bronze is pretty.Slide the hooks over the rod and you can pull them back and forth easily. They also will give you privacy at night and block sunlight during the day.(if the panels are too lightweight they will look too flimsy with the hooks)

I have heard that there are new windows out there that have the blinds stored right in them, but haven't seen any doors of the same...Perhaps you could check the markets of windows and check...

u could always use decorative film.
tinting the glass should be done by professionals, and if you change the glass to a colored piece its going to be an outrageous price. check out the link, it may help you.
