Depends on why you think people are gay.
If it's a choice, then it should not be a problem. However, I do understand the whole "gay-chic" thing could be a distraction with the lisp and funny walk.
If you're born that way, it's a genetic defect, and It would only be a problem if that genetic defect decreases stamina, strength or physical aptitude.
If it's a mental disorder, then it could cause problems with a person's ability to think and react. I don't know. I haven't seen much research on that.
As far as "openly serve," I don't even know what that means. Are you asking if people should be able to have sex during training exercises or while in battle? I think that would be a bad idea.

If they are allowed to openly serve in military service they should have their own unit, like the pink brigade, and be the first on the battle lines and the last ones to leave. They could confuse the enemy by rearrainging their furniture and recommending wardrobe changes, while the enemy is busy scratching their heads trying to figure out just exactly what the hell is going on, the jet fighters come in and destroy a confused enemy.

I have nothing againts gay's being in the military but I dont think its a good idea for them to be openly gay. Other men or women might not appreciate that and bad things can happen. No matter what there will always be prejudice people in the world. so i guess i'd have to say no they should not be openly gay. but whatever floats your boat go for it

There are already gay members in the US military, I do not see what would change if they were openly gay, they would still be the same person they were before.

The military still thinks marriage is about family, you know that stupid thing your parents talked about...getting married, having kids. It hasn't ever been about getting married, having sex... Anybody can do that. Also just to make a point, there is a 'no public display of affection' policy in the military, well at least the army. To me this means you can be friends with someone of the same sex. But it also means you can be friends with someone of the opposite sex IN PUBLIC

It is ridiculous that we, as a civilized society, can't seem to control our prejudices that make us primal barbarians.
What would be the harm? I was in the military and the rule is that all military personnel in uniform are not allowed to show affection in public. This means you can't kiss, hold hands, etc...
So, what on earth would it harm for a homosexual to say 'yes I am gay'? The same rules would apply so it's not like all of a sudden you would see gay ppl kissing, etc..
What makes ppl so ignorant, stupid and prejudice...

Why stop now - when I was in in 93 there were gays in the army - It was obvious two of the guys were gay in my platoon in basic. It's not like they're in there to meet other guys. They kept it to themselves and trust they knew if they tried anything they were likely going to get a beating. Many homosexuals have served they're country proudly, and many have lost their lives because of it.
Society just forced them to hide it.

Ofcourse, there are so many gay and lesbian folk in the military; who are we kidding Just because a person is gay, doesn't mean they will act inappropriate. Look how much screwing around in Iraq is going on between males and females.
