I'll let my children wear whatever they want, within reason. My 16 year old daughter has worn sandals to school in 30 degree weather, my attitude is that it's her feet that are cold, not mine. I think it also depends on how old the children are, if they're elementary school aged it's different than if they're high schoolers. As long as they're not in any physical danger, I wouldn't make an issue of it. I wouldn't worry about 40 degrees w/o socks, the child will put the socks on if the feet get cold enough.
Also, don't let the child complain about being cold when they do this. Some kids just have to figure stuff out on their own. This is a good area for them to do it. good luck!

You may try finding some cute socks that they will want to wear. If you only want to fight one battle at a time, try finding some cute socks that can be worn with sandals. Toe socks are wonderful and in my experience little kids love the look of toe socks and sandals. One little girl would not take her toe socks off without another pair to put on. The toe socks will keep the feet warm even with sandals on.

Kids can get sick easily if they do not have socks on their feet or a hat on their head as that is where the body heats leaves the body (head and feet). I dress my kids according to the weather and how I would want myself to be dressed. My kids wear socks with shoes when we go out and indoors during the fall and winter.

I had the same problem with my middle son about not wanting wear socks and his tennis shoes just reeked from all the sweat. We stayed on him all the time about socks, as soon as he started changing for PE in school he got the idea when the other kids ribbed him about it. I found with my kids that if your feel are chilly then make them wear shoes and socks. We have the rule of thumb for coats, hats, and gloves. Lucky for them my hot flashes didn't start until they were grown or I would have frozen them to death...lol

common sense says to wear shoes when you have to wear a jacket, or pants. if you wear sandals in fourty degree weather, then i can understand youre reasoning in lettnig your children. but generally cold feet in kids leads to colds. Dont know why, its just the way it is.

Cute question. I dress my son according to what I would wear, most times. If I am cold, I dress him warm, and if my feet are cold, I put socks on him. Normally going by your own temp. , helps determine if your little one will be needing more warmth or not. :)

I guess it is personal preference. My childrens school doesn't allow sandals because of the pea gravel on the playground, so once school starts, we are just about done with sandals.

Depends on your preference. Do your feet get cold when it's 40?
