You will know your Dad best, what he treasures, what he dislikes. Remember, that at 85 years of age, there will not be many things he will actually want - not ornamental items that gather dust, perhaps not even a party if he likes peace and quiet. Think of what he may treasure most - something that will make him feel his life has been worthwhile ... something that will embody the love that his family has for him ... its not what an item costs that counts, it is what that item conveys to him.

It's so hard to try and answer this without anymore info. What things really get his attention? Sports hobbies activities? Do you have any siblings? Perhaps if you do have a pow wow to brainstorm ideas off each other. Maybe a present from all of you. DO NOT go for the shirt&tie. LAME! Photos. NYET! Why not a day out with dear old dad. Take him somewhere he hasn't been to in a long time. Think of place where the two of you really had a GREAT time together. The gift doen't have to be a material thing.
MEMORIES!

Yeah! This you can't buy! Get an 85 page notepad NOW. Ask your Dad what was he doing in 1921 and every year since then. Write down exactly what he says. If you are quick you will, in a few weeks time, be able to give it to him and say "Dad! This is your life. You will also have a history of your family back almost to WW1

Ask yourself what he likes and center the party around those interest.

Create a memoir of his life on powerpoint or some other software you can download off the internet for free on a trial basis and use pictures (when he was a child, marriage, graduation, kids, family, now, etc.) then coordinate music with the pictures that are meaningful to him. Videos are a great asset too.

I do that for special occasions and the guest of honor always loves it. I package it in a CD (my husband is an artist) and it becomes a keepsake for the guest of honor.

It's so great that your Dad is still with you! Can you write him a special letter and remind him of good times you have had together? That would be a terrific gift! And maybe make him his favorite dinner? Or give him a gift certificate for something special like a dinner out? For my Dad's 85th I got him a "Best Grandpa" t shirt and had my grown up sons put their huge hand prints on the shirt with paint. It was really funny since the shirt and paint were meant for little kids, but, he liked it!

Framed pictures of family members...maybe have a group sitting done, or a scrapbook of family pictures. At 85, you either have it, had it and lost it or gave it away or you don't want it. Momentos are the best. Oh, and cake, don't forget the cake.

Wow! Eighty-five. Good for him! Does he have any childhood friends still around? People he knew in school, the service, whatever? He might enjoy seeing some of them if they can make it. You could do a "This Is Your Life" type deal.

Short of that, getting all of the kids, grandkids, bros, sisters, cousins, etc., together might be fun for him.
