It does seem like an excessive amount, but it isn't. If you check them out you'll find that most of them are part of the Microsoft OS. especially the running processes. I believe a process is a part of the overall program, like spell check might be one that isn't running most of the time. There might be a dozen processes running to allow you to use your browser and maybe a couple dozen running in relation to Windows itself.

Probably no, if you are in a Microsoft OS. They are extremely wasteful of resources, because, after all, it is YOUR money!
I run on Linux, where the OS and programs are written by people who cherish the 'real estate' of memory, electricity, the resources of the CPU, so, the programs, the OS are all written to be conservative of resources, while providing the highest speeds and out put that is possible.
That is why PC Gaming found out that the Linux system ran games, like Quake III, 8X faster, thatn Microsoft, and, both ran at their peak speeds, though, the Microsfot OS and computer were 'tweakedto the max' while the Linux was what came 'out of the box' as they didn't know about all the great tweaks for Linux!
And, there are some FANTASTIC Linux 'tweaks'!
And, you can do a ''top'' command, in GNU/Linux anytime to see the 100 or fewer processes that Linux is actually running,
normally!
Get my favorite, that I am running right now, to type this, without any hard drives! It is booted from the LiveCDrom, ten days ago, and running in a RAMdisc! Virusfree, hacker proof!
Save my files and downloads toemail message, USB/Firewire thumbdrives, network drives, or a burned CDr/w or DVDr/w!
