the one woman at the car show, her just happening to be near cars you liked maaaybe, but the woman roofing, no, i'm thinking you weren't just taking a pic of her just because you were impressed with her choice of careers...maybe it was even subcouncious, but you gotta cool it with that particular photography subject.

I have to agree with your wife on this one. What do you do with the pictures after you take them? Do you spend time looking at them? If so, then I think you are having issues with strange women. You have a wife --she should be your main focus. Nothing wrong with checking a woman out for a wee bit when they are walking by or whatnot--everyone does it--but you are taking it a step further by documenting said look in pictures. How would you feel if you wife was taking pictures of strange men? It goes both ways.

Your wife is right. You shouldn't be photographing people without them knowing. Also, what is the point of photographing them? I think you can remember you saw a woman shingling a roof without having a picture to remind you.

Please dont do it ! It's very disturbing, you are invading someone's privacy. You might think it's not usual that a woman does roof work, perhaps she's a contractor ! But it's not uncommon for a woman to check a car. You have some deep rooted issues that need to be resolved, things that minght seem ok fo ryou is not, in this case. Would you take picture of a man who cooks or feeding a child. Keep your self in the loved one shoes of those women, they'll be terrified.

It depends on the woman/car aspect ratio of the picture. Taking a picture of a woman roofing? Unless she has half an a$$ cheek hanging out of her shorts and she's begging to be photographed; I must agree with an aswer stated above. You're a stalker in training.

Hmmmph.
Two sides to the answer.
First has to do with females: They worry about their male’s attention wandering. It is hardwired into them the same way a male worrying about who is the father is hardwired into his. I would make sure you stop that now, before the divorce papers arrive.
Now as to the second part. Sort of squishy. Pictures of people get taken all the time. Hell, you walk into a 7-11 or a bank, you have a freaking movie taken of you.
I am sort of on the edge on that one. If you take a series of pictures of a person without their knowledge you really are invading their privacy. I would have to side with your wife on that one.
If someone started taking pictures of you without your knowledge how would you feel? That is sort of the basic question here isn’t it?

Pursuit of Photography beyond the family snapshot requires that you be a little voyeuristic (or a lot) and the female figure is one of the most studied images in the genre, even by female photogs. sounds like you might have to work the wife in somewhere to keep the peace. You might be surprised by how many women would let you take their pic if you asked.

What is the purpose of the pictures? What do you plan on doing with them? When I take pictures I save them to look at later. I don't have a problem with my husband looking at an attractive woman he sees in public, but taking a picture would make it seem he wants more.

Your wife is not only right about the voyeurism thing but has every right to be ticked off. You are tempting fate, sir and it may lead you into more trouble than you every bargained for. Stop before it gets out of hand. Try taking some fun pictures of your wife....could be more fun.

Your wife is right. You should not be taking pictures of people without their knowledge. It one thing if they are in a public place and just happen to be part of the background, but to take shots specifically of them is wrong and bordering on a serious personality dosorder.
