I buy Advantage for my dog. Works great! Its the little tube with the liquid you put between their shoulderblades. The fleas just fall right off of them. Its about $13.00 for one tube and you only use one a month. Check with your vet or go to petmeds.com.

Between spray and spot on - spot on is better.
Flea and Tick medicine is technically a nerve gas - much like Agent Orange You may notice your dog getting a little sleepy or lethargic after the application. Make sure your dog has time to rest after you put it on. Is it safe for dogs - sure - in moderation and control. There have been some dog deaths out there due to different Flea and Tick medicines - so do you research. Frontline is definitely the most respected in the marketplace.
There are natural remedies as well - such as shampoo's that are Yucca based. Or the suggestion of the Vinegar. Feeding your dog garlic supplements also helps if you do have a flea/tick problem.
There are many things to consider when choosing any type of chemical medication for your pet. Do your research and make the best decision for you.
Good Luck

Frontline is my favorite flea and tick prevention, it comes in a spot on or a spray and both are a monthly application. There is another flea tick and mosquito spot on called K9 Advantix it is only for dogs though, so if you need it for cats try the Frontline

I use revolution for my dogs, it does heartworm, flea, and tick. Revolution is a spot on, I have actually never heard of the spary on. Revolution is a little pricey, but when you consider the fact that it:
kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching for one month (until the next application)
prevents and controls flea infestations
prevents heartworm disease
treats and controls ear mite infestations
treats and controls sarcoptic mange
controls tick infestations

I like to use revolution for flea's, tick's, and heart worms. Its a liquid that you put on the back of the neck once a month. Before you use this product you need to have you're dog tested for heart worms. My dog is allergic to everything, and this product seems to work the best. Good luck.

Don't know about tick but my cat has be flea free for two years now. The secret is nutritional yeast (get it at health food stores) sprinkle some on their food. Also helps to boost their immune system.

After trying all of the current products available, I feel that Frontline Plus is the only thing that is worth what it costs.
Get this from your vet and it is worth every penny! Nothing else comes close.
