We are told to spread the gospel and there so many people to reach out to. This is the Religion & Spirituality site so this is a place to go to do it. If they don't want to be preached to why should they even come here as that is what it is for? Yes I'm afraid it is too much to ask us to stop spreading the gospel but should be done with out you getting hate email about it when you are only stateing what you believe to be the truth.

Well some of these people are from religions where they've had it drilled into their heads since a very young age that they HAVE to preach and witness to others in order to be considered a good little Christian/Muslim/whatever. There's nothing much that can be done there. While those people are annoying, it is understandable why they do it. All you can do is ignore it cause they aren't going to stop.
Then you have some people who are insecure in their paths and beliefs on some level and feel that they must establish their security by defending their beliefs to the death against any real or imagined attack on their belief system. They are cowards who don't want to admit that they aren't that firm in their faith so they lash out at others who question it or whom they feel are attacking it (even if they are not). And yes Atheism IS a faith...they have faith in science and in the "fact" that there is no God. Just about all you can do with those people is ignore them as well, but perhaps spare a little pity and compassion for them as they are just miserable and only taking it out on others to make themselves feel better.
And others, like that troll, are just attention-seeking jerks. Ignoring them is really the best way to go.
So to answer your question....yes, for some people, that is too much to ask. It's sad but we have to live with it. We can choose to either let them get us down or we can hold our heads up high and take comfort in the fact that we are secure enough in our faiths that we don't feel we have to defend them.

Yeah, it sounds like war in "Yahoo Answers" when we ought to have freedom of belief. To me the problem is that religion should not be getting politically involved, but since government is now politically involved with education (for example) when it did not used to be, religion is now on the defensive, and has to be more political.
My best guess is the the problem started when the government started to enforce separation of church and state. That was not the intent of the bill of rights. The intent was the free expression of religion with a statement against the formation of a national religion. However, we somehow lost sight of the goal (free expression) and focused on the enabler (separation).
If the federal government gets involved in local matters to take religion out of the local school or community, that drives society to atheism. Why? School is where learning occurs. If religion is not a fit topic to talk about in school, like it used to be, you gotta believe there is something wrong with it. Thus a political battle must begin.
My solution is to keep religion out of national government as envisioned. However, at the local level, anything goes to enable the free expression of religion, for that is liberty. For example, the puritans came to America to practice their faith and bring up their families in the faith of their choice. If they were to want to do this today, they would have to sail away, again. That alone shows how we have changed.
I like diversity, so let communities do what they want in terms of beliefs and faith. You do not have to move into a puritan community. And if you do, you will have to bend to their morals. And why not? I do not want everyone to be a cookie cutter similar person.
So I agree with you, believers should be respected as believers, and non-believers the same. We need to remember to mind our own business, and let others have the freedom to be who they are.
The question is how do we get there? Few people seem to be thinking anymore. I hear too many pat answers and snide remarks on this site.

Grow up yourself! Who said "we" started preaching to everyone just like that? And even if "they" do, why not calm down yourself, respect the fact that some people accidently/mistakenly started doing so and move on? And also, I have no idea what you mean by "online war"- is arguing by telling each other's opinions considered as war now? Like I said, grow up a little! I'm not trying to say so rudely, just honestly. If contradiction, arguing, sharing opinions in a moderately aggressive way or so bothers you, I'd say you should just move on!
Is this too much to ask as well?

I don't believe religion brings out the morons from the woodwork, however religious zealots or fundamentalists, regardless of their belief system, rarely if ever question their faith and instead follow the tenets of their belief system to letter of the law. This one dimensional, ideological approach to ones faith sadly creates a whole group of people who don't think or question, but rather class of believers who simply follow.
The act of blindly following anyone, or any belief system inevitable results in one having to become a simplistic thinker to maintain the energy it takes to follow blindly and without question - which, suffice to say, often results in a person who can come across as those of us who do question and who embrace nuance as being moronic.
And of course, they are not moronic they just have decided to create a "uber simple" world to live in, which to many of us seems moronic, but them it seems safe and simple.

Growing up is asking these questions of one another. It is a shallow and blinded individual that thinks we need to isolate ourselves from one another.
If one has found the truth and has experienced this truth in a real way and they see those that are lost then they are compelled to share this truth with others. This is a directive of God Himself.

some people abuse their right to free speech, thinking that it gives them license to "talk" without thinking, or to just be plain stupid. it is much easier to go on the offensive, and therefore BE offensive, than it is to rationally think, accept and tolerate, or basically just be a decent human being.
just look a the some of the responses youve got already. people cant handle or tolerate the fact that someone does not think or believe the way they do. look how they attack or try to use sarcasm instead of their brains.

hey, im a moron, and i take offense to that. and besides, i dont live in the woodwork, i live in a shoebox. to answer your question. well, i would say that the design of people is to express themselves, and when it comes to the deeper matters of life (like who we are and where we come from), people are going to have pretty strong beliefs, and it will be hard for them not to express them. which, ultimately results in the moronic behavior you speak of.
