-A loaf of bread
-Selection of jams and other condiments
-Sunscreen (You can't forget to apply a bit more by lunch time if it's in the basket!)
-A few bottles of water. Especially when under the hot sun, water is lost quickly, and a liter of water a day is recommended for maintaining good skin.
-A few confectionaries
-A knife, for spreading condiments, of course

You should stay away from cheeses and meats, which could emit uncomfortable smells on the beach, especially if it's hot. Bread is filling, while condiments would offer a wide selection of flavors. Confectionaries could top off the small meal with a bit of sugar or chocolate, while water is necessary always, as is the sunscreen.

Enjoy!

Things that won't melt or go bad quickly unless you plan to put them in ice. Peanut butter and jelly, chips, soda, healthy fruit, water. If you're going to eat it right away, roasted chicken is fun on the beach, although it could be because for me it's associated with many fond memories.... Whatever you put in there, I hope you'll include a bit of spirit not to litter. :) (taking some bags to be used for garbage helps. 'wishing you a great time!
