Tail docking is in the breed standards for poodles and many other breeds as well. Whether you will show them or not, most breeders will dock their tails at an early age 1)because they are less likely to chew on the tail when they are young and 2) because it really should not be done once they have fully developed into adulthood (problems could arise). The AKC website has access to breed standards and other info about tail docking and ear cropping.

Some dog breeds have standards that call for cutting a dog's tail short - it's called docking (Dobermans and Rotties are examples). The breeders dock the tails of all the puppies to follow the standard or because people are just used to seeing the breed without one.

You might get a kick out of watching your dog wag its nub - my sister's Rottie wagged his a lot!

Depends upon the breed of dog. Poodle and Rottweiler pups have their tails docked routinely. This is an American thing. You can not show a dog that has a docked tail or ears in Europe.

Some pups are born with no tail. I have seen this myself, it is rare though.

ps - some humans are born with extra fingers, toes and stub tails. These are routinely removed.

Some breeds (such as Old English Sheepdogs) traditionally have their tails "docked", because it was felt that the tail served no practical purpose. It's one of those things that has gone on for generations. There are pros & there are cons.

It's called "DOCKING" not "cutting" !!! It's NO BIG DEAL!!!

Read the BREED STANDARDS!!! **MANY** breeds are *supposed* to be docked, including POODLES!

&&&...you do NOT have a "teacup" anything!!!

NO SUCH THING!!! TOY poodles are UNDER 10 inches! That's it,period.

It is usullly done for "breed standard" for the AKC if it is a pure breed dog. Some people dock puppies tails just becasue that is how they like them!

Because like everything else, humans think things should have a certain look. To bad WE weren't born when a damn tail. I would love to return the favor for the pups.
