Love comes naturally. Honest Communication is the greatest thing...starting from day one..
For example....my son when he was 5 got his finger caught in an excercise machine. He required 5 stitiches. I took him to the ER and explained to him exactly what the doctor would do...needle, bit of pain, stitches, etc. He didn't cry a tear while the doctor did this. Doctor asked what did you tell him...I reponded.."the truth...I told him exactly what you would do." Doctor said I should write a book. I've done this their whole lives and I've been blessed with the most perfect kids a parent could ever want. They are both adults now and have never been a single problem to me because of Honest Communication. As I said....Love is a given.

Make sure by the time they're ready to move out of your house, they are prepared to face this world!
So many people I know (the men, for some reason more than the women) cannot handle real life. What I mean by that is keep a clean house, earn a full time living, pursue higher education. I blame the parents. I'm in my late 20's and my roommates still choose video games over sleep and education then complain how they can't earn more than $10 per hour and can't seem to attract a suitable mate.

Love is a given, unless you're a sociopath.
The greatest thing a parent can do for their child is to teach them behavioral limits while simultaneously showing them all the possibilities that exist for them. A precarious dichotemy.

Teach them how to be a human. The animal side of us is naturally there, its learning to apply self control, kindness, responsiblity, things like that that make us human and a productive part of society.

accept them for who they are even if that means accepting a homosexual, an atheist, or any of the hundreds of things that they become that you may not like
Unless of course they become a drug addict or something that will obviously cause them bad health or put their life in danger.
But then even jeffrey dahmers parents visited him in jail before he was murdered.
Unconditional love
