I didnt think so since my parents are both mexican and came to the the US (legally) in the 70s. My mom doesnt talk english, and she got fired recently for fighting with a coworker when that coworker told her " you illegals are just here to take our jobs, you are just a stinking indian with head lice" when i heard what she had said, i started to cry. How could some people be really ignorant? My mom cant get her job back that she has worked in for the past 30 years. Her Job guidelines say she can report the matter, but she may not act on it. So theres not much she can do, she lost her temper and she acted on it. Rules are rules. But did anyone seriously cannot understand why she got pissed off? Is the immigration debate race related???

No its not that she doesnt know english, she just doesnt want to speak it. Personal choice. Her work doesnt require for her to speak english.

For some people it seems to be race related, but most of us just want our own children to be able to get a decent education in the public schools we pay for, again.

I am sorry about your Mom. Unfortunately, physical violence is considered worse than insults, but those were definitely fighting words, so they should definitely be taken into account.

Maybe the coworker had head lice and was looking for someone to blame it on....

If your family is here legally, they are in the right and idiots, as always, are in the wrong.

I am opposed to illegal immigration, but I am also opposed to people like your mother's coworker. I think your Mom should very nicely approach someone in management who likes her and tell her side of the story. Fighting is wrong, but I'd kind of like to punch her coworker, myself.

It IS about race. Race has always been a fiery platform that draws radical support. Hitler did it. The KKK did it. The skinheads do it. It doesn't matter what you fight when you base it upon race. You instantly attract bigots who are all too ready to squeal the cause of humanity's piglets.

I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I don't think she should back down to this. She should use the very system these racist anti-immigrant activists are claiming to defend, and she should slam the company, publicize their behavior, and rally as many "legal" Latino workers to her cause as possible. She should go to the media with this.

Your mother doesn't sound like the kind who wants to cause trouble. But trouble found her because of her race. She should make her employer pay. She should sue. She should publicize it so every employer around hears about it.

In doing so she'll support the cause of LEGAL Latin workers, and at the same time will frighten other employers away from discriminating against ANYONE because of race. This will, ironically, actually help the illegal immigrant workers.

So yes, it is race related. And we should use the FACT that it's race related, using the system's own laws, to DESTROY the racist, anti-immigrant agenda.

I think it's all gonna get pretty ugly, you've got people trying to hold on home while holding residence in a new country, and frankly there needs to be a clear demarcation with immigration. Once you've 'crossed over', that's it, you're becoming an american, now...some people can't let go of home, and that's hard. But, nonetheless, because we've been so sloppy with immigration these last 20 years or so, now there's a HUGE problem and it wouldn't surprise me if some racism is mixed in here...some people have really hard feelings vs. mexico/mexicans, and that'll probably never change. Best fix for it is to ensure that people that DO emigrate do so fully above-board and legally...

I'm sorry about your mom!!! She should not have been fired!!
But to answer your question,NO, this is not about a persons "race". It just happens that the MAJORITY of illegals are mexican!!!
Unfortunately, people are ANGRY with the government's refusal to do something to STOP the ILLEGAL invasion, because that is EXACTLY what this is!! So,innocent people are bound to get hurt!! People are frustrated, that nothing is being done. And,that our elected officials, are TOO BUSY trying to "kiss ***",to give a CRAP to what is happening to this country and the people that live here!! I have many friends, and even some family members, who are mexican, but i still get called a "racist' by others on here. I don't care though, because i know i'm not. But,what DOES bother me,is i'm afraid that there is going to be major VIOLENCE before this thing's over, and that many innocent people will suffer! When the ILLEGALS marched in this country, carrying their mexican flags, and DEMANDING that we give them "rights',well that made a LOT of Americans very ANGRY!!!! You don't go to someone ELSE'S home, and start demanding they take care of you, at THEIR expense!!! So,tempers are at the boiling point, and as i said,i'm afraid a lot of innocent people are going to be hurt, before this is over!!

No; to me, it's rights related, and economy related. I think it's perfectly fine for Mexican-Americans to have all the rights (and attendent responsibilities) of other citizens; I've had good friends that were legal immigrants. However, illegal immigrants are getting the same rights without the responsibilities, and it's not bloody fair. And I don't care WHERE they're immigrating from, if they're not here legally they should GO HOME!

It's America everything is race related. Whether you are black, Chicano, Muslim, or Asian, you are never given a fair chance. This is life. Minorities in general are never given a free chance. I do feel sorry for your mother, and I do believe she should report the actions by her co workers. Yes the immigration debate is race related. If it was another Caucasian country and people were getting jobs they wouldn't say anything. This is sad but true.

First of all im really amazed she hasnt had the time to pick up any english as long as she has been here in the states.even the smallest schools offer night classes for adults to learn english for free.sounds like someone doesnt want to apply the effort.as far as being pissed off to the slander,im sure it wasnt her first time to be insulted.since i already speak spanish due to the fact i grew up in a border town{el paso} i learned it in school and at work.as far as getting fired there are alot things can be done look at the fair labor board and ask questions.

Yes it is about race.

Why don't we blame the employers? Why aren't those outrageous stereotypes made about employers....

Why don't I ever hear you people say things like "why are employer so stupid" like you say that about illegals and Mexicans in general?

I don't hear the loathing and disdain from you people about unethical employers that I hear about illegals...For many it is just about hate, pure and simple..

I totally agree with Michael....What was done to your mother is illegal. She has rights under Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ....She needs to file a compliant due to discrimination....If more legal immigrants speak out, racist employers will be exposed..

To answer RandomGuy's statement, the problem is the illegal immigrant population has more than tripled in the past 5 years causing overcrowded schools, overcrowded highways, job shortages...etc. Shall i go on? Wake up man. As far as race, no it's not the issue. For me anyway. If you come to this country legally reguardless of race, then hey, great. Welcome to my country. My hat's off to you.

no its not about race as of yet but that card keeps being thrown out there so you will draw more of those people out . and the pro team wont let that go , so then you have that many people repeating it over and over till that's what a lot of people believe. and how has your mom worked and got along this far in this country without speaking english? sad
