I am in the market for a new digital camera but I'm getting a little overwhelmed with all the choices. I am looking for something under 500.00 with at least a 10x zoom. I would like it to be reasonably easy to use. Do any of you have any suggestions? I would REALLY appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

I just checked these out for myself. They are all $300 to $500, have 12x zooms, Images Stabilization and 5 mb to 8 mb. All have excellent pro reviews and take great pics. Be sure to get one with Image Stabilization.

Sony H1, H2, H5
Canon S2 IS, S3 IS
Panasonic FZ7, FZ20, FZ30

I bought the Sony H1 for $340 because it had the biggest LCD (2.5 in) under $400. I am really happy with it.

Lots of reviews at

Good paper on using this type of camera at

(Paper written about the H1, but applies to all of this type.)

Good Luck

I've been using an Olympus Camedia with 10x optical zoom for about 2 years. It has produced excellent results for me, particularly as it has a macro zoom so you can take some amazing close-ups of things like flowers.

The zoom is excellent for photographing animals in zoos, the colours are also quite vibrant. I've found Olympus to be easy to use and often use the automatic setting but occasionally it is good to play around with the manual settings.

The current version of this camera is the SP-500 zoom. Olympus generally has a very good reputation for excellence in optics. It cost about US$350

Check the reviews the earlier answer mentions - maybe you'll see what you want! One big thing, ignore any mention of digital zoom, what you want is optical.
Another thing to consider, how many mega-pixels? Just think, how large a copy will you want to print? My Panasonic FZ30 is 8MP (and 12x zoom, which equals 420mm) and with normal settings will print to A3 size - and I can't see that happening too often! But the camera had everything else I want. So I bought it. One of the main considerations for me, is that I like taking portrait shots, so the larger zoom was a main consideration. Think about your own photo requirements. A long zoom for portraits? Yes, otherwise you have to just about stick the camera up someone's nose to take a head and shoulders shot!!!
