Because the anti-clotting agent in the mosquito's saliva causes a minor allergic reaction. If the mosquito didn't use that, then the blood would clot immediately and the mosquito wouldn't be able to feed. In some people the allergic reaction can get very bad, and others it's just a minor lump that really doesn't itch at all.

It is their secretion that they leave in us that cause that awful itching.
And of course with the break-out nation-wide of West-Nile virus, it is doubly important to wear mosquito repellent. (Especially kids and older folks whose immune system is not as strong).
Certain people react more strongly to a common mosquito bite and can have nasty reactions (welting, etc).
Wear darker clothing, cover yourself, and protect with repellent if you'll be near woods, trees, water...don't let the little buggers get you! (They're nasty).

I always thought it was because they carried other peoples' blood, and other peoples' blood would cause something like that, that's why I never take blood donations even though i never needed one lol.
