Ice pack on the back of the head or neck and a soak in a really warm tub for a while always helps me. Then ice pack the head again after the bath and climb in bed motionless.

I've been suffering from migrains for 40 years now. Been on many, many pain relivers muscle relaxers and antiinflammatories. I mix 3 parts peppermint oil to one part lavendar oil and rub it on my temples neck and across my forehead several times an hour until I get relief The lavendar scent is very soothing and the peppermint is cooling. Believe me I've tried everything and anything. A friend at work turned me on to this awhile back when I was at work suffering on day 4 with a headach. After everything I had tried for the past 4 days didn't work I was at my wits end and ready to give up again. The next step was a 45 bullet to the head... So I tried he oils and to my disbelief it worked. It really worked. Now I carry a bottle with me always. Plus it a whole lot neater then the 45 to the head. Like the life cereral ad says... Try it you'll like!!!!!

I use either heat or ice on the muscles in the back of my neck. That seems to work the best. I say heat or ice, because it depends on the type of migraine I get. If i get one from muscle tension, then I use heat. The Thermacare patches for the neck that last 8 hours saved my life yesterday at work. I slapped one of those babies on, and the headache went away in a little more than an hour... but for those that suffer from migraines.. and hour is nothing. I also like putting gel pads that i've had in the fridge over my eyes.. that helps as well.

There are other ways to get rid of the migraines:
Go for a manual one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. The effect on the self-healing power of the body is simply amazing - own experience. :-)
And it's really worth travelling far - at present, the treatment is available in California and Europe only, costing about 200 Dollars. Good luck!

Excedrin Migraine (or Imitrex) and a cold pack on the forehead.
And if meds aren't helping...it might not be a migraine, maybe you have a sinus infection that hurts like a migraine.

Dear Bluesun
I think you have your medical question a little bit mixed up.
Really, your question should be:-
" What cures Migraine in order to allow you to sleep ?."
I know Bluesun, you have asked me in your question not to talk about Drug's & Medication's, but as I am spending my time in trying to help you, then please be kind enough to give me a little respect in trying to help you by talking about Drug's & Medication's for Migraine.
First, from the reading of your question, it appears that you have acute attack's of migraine, whereby what ever Drug, or Medication which you have tried in the past as had no beneficial therapeutic value in releiving this condition.
May be it is the question that what you have tried, you have not given the Drug, or Medication a chance to do it's work.
All Drug's & Medication's of a oral taking, take some time to take effect upon that part of the body which it is to act upon.
In true Migraine, pain is not only felt in the head, but also in the cheek bones of the face and the pain felt in the cheek bones of the face is caused by Cateract Mucus Membraines collecting together within the nasal passages of the nose and it's lining.
It is therefore the Cateract Mucus within the nose which causes the pain to the facial cheek bones and consequently as a result of the nerve structure between the nose and the brain acute pain also develops within the forhead and the temples.
The medical cure for this condition is not, what will make you sleep whilst you have a migraine, but what will cure the migraine to allow you to sleep.
Now we come on to the bit that you did not want me to talk about.
Although you have not stated which Drug's & Medication's you have tried in the past which don't have any affect upon your condition and even though I am somewhat 3,500 miles away from you, I would like to bet that what you have been taking is Over-The-Counter Drug's & Medicines from your local Drug Store, or Pharmacy.
There is a Drug/Medication which is on the legal market within
the USA and which as been going for many years to help migraine sufferer's and this Drug/Medication is called [ Mucrone ].
However and although this Drug/Medication does not cure migraine, it does however, give the sufferer relief in order to sleep.
If you do deside to try [ Mucrone ] then please give it chance to take affect upon you and don't exspect it to take affect in 2 minutes flat.
I therefore trust that this answer's your medical question.

A hot towel on my head, complete silence, and a dark room. The meds don't help, but sometimes when I feel one coming on I get the towel and head for my room. It helps about 75% of the time.

Keep away from light and heat; have a cool blindfold/washcloth for your eyes. Turn off all noise. Make sure you have a high quality pillow. Suck on an ice chip if you get sweaty.
