dvd shows progressive scan instead of showing the picture or it only plays sound.

It is possible that the option to turn progressive scan on or off is in the DVD players main menu. Occasionally, there will be a switch for progressive scan on the back side of the DVD player.

Most DVD players output progressive scan on the component outputs only. You will not get progressive scan on s-video or composite (yellow RCA plug) outputs.

your tv may not be capable of playing progressive scan most tvs were 480i which means 480 interlaced lines of resoloution ( how many lines make the picture)(interlaced means that out of 480 about half of them are displayed) 480p is provressive scan which makes the picture clearer using all 480 lines, usually digital tvs (LCD plasma and any HDTV) also another requirement is to use s-video cable or better to enjoy this format
