The only way to change your avatar into a real photograph is if you get a Yahoo! 360 account. It's free but you have to sign up for it. To create one, click on your avatar to take you to your profile page, and then click on the "Add details" link. You'll be taken to your profile editing page. Look down and click on the link which says "Get my Yahoo! 360 account now!". You'll be taken to another page; follow the instructions onscreen to create your Yahoo! 360 account. Once you're done, you'll have the option to upload and use a photograph.

To create animated GIFs, you'll need a copy of Photoshop. See below for an excellent tutorial with image references:
