I'm not sure what you mean exactly.
In Greek culture, when a person passes away, we light a candle, and the candle must burn for 40 days. It is because we believe that the soul stays in the home for forty days before it ascends into heaven. Then we have a memorial service (Pseho Savato) to commemorate those who have passed.

I really, as a devout Christian, have no idea. But on the other hand have no doubts about it may exsist in some religions. There are many attributes to the number forty in the Bible. The children of Israel were in the wilderness for forty years, it rained for forty days and forty nights. Jesus himself, went into the Wilderness for forty days, where he was tempted by Satan. I am sorry this is all the information I can give you.
