Assuming you buy it with at least a week left before the expiration date (which is a "sell-by" date NOT a "use-by")...It really depends on how cool your refrigerator is. The closer to 35-36 degrees the better and keep it in the bottom. Any cooler and it will start to form slush...any warmer and it will decrease the life...usually 6-10 days from the time you open it. Our refrigerator works well and we've had some last over 2 weeks (only when the kids were gone) without turning sour. It also depends on how often and how long you keep the container out at room temperature.

That depends on many factors. The primary factors would be the amount of bacteria in the milk to start with, the temperature of your refrigerator and the age of the milk...
Also whether it is pastuerized or not.

OK, first of all, understanding the Expiration date: The expiration date is determined by a formula that assumes an average starting population of bacteria in the milk, milk being kept at a certain temperature range and the time it takes for those bacteria to reproduce to the point where they will sour the milk.

Bacteria have an optimal temperature range at which they'll multiply. Keeping the milk outside that optimal temperature range keeps them from multiplying fast.

Every time you pour some milk out, air goes in to replace the volume in the container, and sometimes bacteria come in with the air.

If you keep your milk near freezing, and the starting bacteria population was low, you can keep and consume milk long past the expiration date.

Hope this helps.

The date stamped on milk cartons in the US is a SELL BY date, not a USE BY date. Assuming your fridge works and you don't let the milk sit outside the fridge for long periods, it should last for 7 days after you open it.

It may last slightly longer if you only open the carton enough to make a very small hole. The hole you make when you open the carton is a path for bacteria to get into the milk, and it never closes.

from experience milk just stays fresher and tastes better in a carton, and not a jug... so in a carton it could last like 2 weeks maybe a bit more. a jug as in a gallon, would be best if its used up within 10 days. but i would go by the date on the container, and of course your sensesof smell ( sour ) and sight ( lumpy ) NOT GOOD! ;-)

According to the experts, it's supposed to be good for one week after the expiration date but I've kept it as long as two weeks after expiration date. Depends on what you are using it for.
