My groomer says that before she will groom my toy poodle again I will have to get her sedatives. The groomer says that the dog is so small and sensitive about anybody touching her legs and feet that she is afraid the dog will hurt herself or even break a leg by pulling so hard when they groom her legs. I was told by a neighbor that her vet said to give her dog benadryl on fourth of july because he is so scared of fireworks. Could I just use benadryl since I really can't afford to go to the vets for such an issue or is there any other household remedies?

The dog is fine with me playing with her feet and grooming her but when a stranger tries to do it she pulls her feet away but she isn't very strong. I will have to ask about a sling because I wasn't aware of it. I really can't afford $55 on top of grooming. I have three dogs, all of whom, were abandoned. I have money put away for vet costs in case of emergency but not for things like this. This groomer was affordable and did a good job that is why I was trying to find a solution.

Don't mess around with home remedies for sedation - you could kill your dog! Have him groomed at a vet's office or try another groomer - a toy Poodle can't be that hard to handle. In the meantime, get the dog used to having his feet handled and brushing him every day yourself. Sit on the floor and lie him on his back between your legs. Practice every day with a brush. When he can handle that, gradually add hair dryers and nail clippers - making clicking noises and gently handling his feet. Pet him and massage him and praise him and give him tiny treats so that he enjoys it.

Household Sedatives

Benadryl is fine, It will calm the dog but its not an actual sedative. If you can avoid it I wouldnt, maybe try a different groomer, I agree with Gwen. You cant listen to everything you hear. Good luck. A general exam with the vet would be the safest. They would give you a sedative like ace/ket which slows the heart rate but there are many many options, general cost of the meds and exam would be about $55. Would be well worth it then you can always get refills without the exam for a least a year

There is an all-natural over-the-counter product called Content-Um (it used to be called Serene-Um). It has tryptophan (the stuff in turkey that makes you sleepy) along with other vitamins and minerals. I give it to my dog around the 4th of July because of the fireworks also. It really works. It costs about $6 for 30 tablets, and it's made especially for dogs. The Foster and Smith catalog is where I buy mine, but I'm sure a pet store would have it too. Never ever give human meds to an animal, unless recommended by a vet, not just a groomer.

Sounds like you should try a new groomer. I agree with GitEmGang. A sling would prevent pulling, and all groomers I have used use one. No groomer should encourage you to use a sedative. It's a "band-aid" for the problem, not a solution.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOG HUMAN MEDICINE!
These is no way for you to determine the amount (per body weight) you would need to administer. Ask a VET!
Have you tried grooming the dog yourself?
If it's a reputable groomer, they have harnesses and such to prevent the dog from btitng or harming itself!

NO! NO!! NO!!! DON'T medicate!!! OR let the groomer do so! I've done GAZILLIONS of NASTY little spoiled rotten dogs w/out ANY meds. It's called MUZZLE the monster! & then go ahead to DO it!
There's also a VERY nifty trick called a SLING! Dog CAN'T pull because it has NOTHING to push against!

BTW...ever heard of TRAINING?

Try a local pet shop. I have a Jack Russell that is a little hyper at times when we have company. I got him some "doggie downers" from Petsmart and they work just fine.

Benadryl can cause a dog to get sleepy but isn't a tranquilizer.

benadryl is for allergies not a sedative and if give incorrectly can cause death in the dog
