My last bird, a light blue parakeet died 2 months ago while I was on vacation (someone else was watching it). I've missed having a bird around and want to get another. What type of bird should I get? I already have a cage that is 18' x 18' x 18' and the bird can't cost more than 50 dollars. I want a bird that I can interact with. What type should I get and where can I find it.

P.S. I live in Virginia.

I was thinking of throwing the old cage away and getting something bigger. I can get a 24' or 30' if necessary

Try a cockatiel. I live in Des Moines, Iowa and I saw an ad in the paper for baby cockatiels for $45 each. I have a 2 year old cockatiel and he like to whistle and sing and males can even talk. Not all cockatiels can talk but most males can. They're very playful and they like to hop up on your finger and play around mine bits but it's only a little pinch and it doesn't hurt.

cuz of the cage size, it would be cruel 2 get anything other than a parakeet or a finch. but if u got one that's a little bigger, like a 24 inch cube, then it would be okay 2 get something like a cockatiel or a lovebird. Cockatiels are pretty cheap and they don't make much noise, but they can talk if u teach them. U can get some pretty good deals if u shop at the local pet store or a bird show, which is basically a bird seller's convention with free admission. All of them have a huge room for selling birds, and u can compare the birds that u like 2 each other and pick the best one out. The prices are lower than at a store too, cuz they don't have 2 pay for employees' salaries, and most of the time they'll give u the cage or a good bargain on it. Ask the owners if the birds have any special needs before you buy, or it could get sick and die. Bird shows come about once every 1 or 2 months. use google to check for some in ur area.

If you've only got a $50 budget you're kind of stuck with either another parakeet or maybe a cheap cockatiel if you can find it. If you can come up with a little more money a great bird is a Quaker Parrot, don't know how much they are by you, but they're about $150 where I live. They are small, great talkers, and a lot of fun to have. They work fine in a parakeet cage as well.

You can get a parakeet. If you go to petsmart, get two, a green one and a blue one. THose are the ones I had. I got them on April 6 this year, and they still didn't die. First of all, they live long if they are from petsmart, and they don't cost tooo much. I got two parakeets, a medium-sized cage, and bird food for only 75 bucks. Hope this helps!
PS: I named the green one Michelle and the blue one ashley, though I think that ashley is a boy.

I'm sorry your keet died! If you're not willing to replace the cage, you'll have to stick to getting another bird the same size as you keet since 1.5 feet cubed is not enough room for a bird larger than a finch, cockatiel, or parakeet. You must also consider bar spacing to suit the size of the bird, as thin bars spaced closely enough for a keet will be too weak for a larger bird and also invite them to get a toe stuck.

Your cage size suggests another small bird. It depends on the bar spacing. Remember that the bird will learn to love you. Handing it over to someone while on vacation was a no-no unless they knew how to take care of birds. I would suggest a lovebird but they are slightly more expensive that $50.00. Have any friends with birds? My lovebird is on my hand as I type this just to be inquisitive.

I suggest that you get a cockateil or a lovebird. Cockatiels often cost less than 50 dollars. They make great pets and can be easilly taught tricks. They can even be taught to speak. On the other hand lovebirds are very kind and cute animals. You can try to go to Pennysaverusa.com and it will surely give you a great deal on several pet birds. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

I really loved having a cockatiel. He was fantastic, and extremely friendly to everyone (even strangers). They can talk too, but you don't have to worry about bititing since they aren't very large birds. They have a ton of personality. Just make sure you get a "hand-raised" bird. They are about $70 which is a bit over your budget, but they're worth it. :)

Cocktails are great, they talk and are usually very friendly and start at about 60 dollars...they are bigger then a parakeet but smaller then a parrot
