I used to ride the subway for about 2 years. what really works is asking for transportation related questions (even if you know the answer) for example you can began the conversation by asking: do you know at what time does the next train arrives? or something dumb like that. then you can give her a complement on how how much she knows. for example: oh! you really know your way around here, do you work here? then depending on what she says then you can say: oh! that nice there is this restaurant I really like around here it called ____________ have you ever heard of it? she might say yes or she might say no. try to keep your questions very general and not to personal the same way with your conversation don't talk about your problems or your personal life. try to talk about things that might off been on TV last night or something you read in a magazine. it always helps to carry a book.
