Call your vet to determine if you should take the opossum in to have it tested for rabies. If it has rabies and your dog is not vaccinated against rabies, he will need to be treated immediately.

Well,First,is your dog up to date on his shots. His rabie shot is important. If not, take him to the vet IMEDIATLEY.And get him his shot.If he does have rabies, and he's not up to date on his shots, you have to put him to sleep. Now what do you do about the possum? You can burrie it in the woods, you can put it in a trash bag and take it to the dump.Or you can let your dog eat it wich isnt the BEST choice but, hey, atleast he gets a treat. But if you dont want your dog killing possums,Call his name, show him the possum, and dont hit him but in a firm voice yell NO!!!!!!Your dog will get it eventually.

HI,,, i am a wildlife rehab person,, what your dog did is fine,,, it was just protecting you from harm... not that an opossum is going to hurt you...
Opossums are like Armidillos or Rabbits,, part of the food chain,, so there are plenty of them,,,they usually do not carry rabies,, so I would not worry about that too much,,,,
Skunks and Bats,,, do,, so you can watch out for them ....
Just say "good dog" and throw the possum away in the trash or in the woods.... and forget about it.... ok.......
good luck

Tell him what a **GOOD DOG** he is!!!!
BUT...have you checked to see if the carcass is STILL THERE??? Possum are VERY hard to kill(the saying is"they're too stupid to know they're DEAD!!) & yes...they *DO* "play possum"! For a LONG time!
I hunt w/my terriers & we've taken DOZENS of possum just this season...hundreds over the years. *I* do the dispatching!
DO NOT GET ALL GEEKED ABOUT**ANY** DISEASES!!! DO NOT CALL **ANYBODY** about it!! They WON'T CARE!! & certainly won't "do" anything about it!!!
Geeeeeeeeeeeze,people,GROW UP!!!

make sure you dispose of the possum somehow, maybe with animal control. if your dog does it a lot i would try training it.

Call animal control and have them remove it. Or take it out back in the woods. Something will eat it. Hope your dog has all his shots.
