Oh wow, Bill. There is always hope, but when things get really bad...go get help. I had a period in my life when things really hit rock bottom for me. I thought that things would never get better.

I did get some help and got some meds just to help me cope. Nothing strong, nothing that zonked me out. Things did improve; and they improved quickly!

I found my vocation in life and I now I have a job I adore. Sometimes the best things come out of the worst disasters.

Also, whenever I feel the world is ganging up on me and I feel I need some direction in life, I read the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It is my feel-good book and gives me strength and direction.

I wish you all the best. My prayers are with you. No one deserves to be depressed, but trust me...it will pass.

Maybe it's time to let go of "being the boss" and being responsibile for an entire business. Maybe its time to become a worker bee again. That way you won't have to be in charge of figuring out every week if you're gonna enough $ to pay your workers.. Maybe you'll have more time than all the time you must be worrying about making the business work. Maybe try to get a job as manager because you obviously have management skills but leave the rest of the responsibility to someone else. Go home at 5 or whatever time you get off and leave all the drama at work.. Maybe go to a movie some time.. Or a concert.. We all have the capability of making changes in our lives at any time. My Grandmother decided to go to Law School at the age of 60! She passed the bar and opened up her own bankruptcy practice at age 65. She worked until her early 80's and retired not because she was tired but because my Grandpa needed her at home. Her life story has always given me hope that if there is ever a time where I feel like I want to do something new it's never too late EVER.

First, check things out with the doctor. That's important because if you have depression it will not help you to move ahead.
50 can be an empowering age for you. Everything that's been happening may be an indication that it's time for a change.
The main thing is have a check-up with the doc and give yourself credit. Its not the failing that matters, its the fact that you gave it a go and it's really difficult with businesses these days. Good luck.

Go do volunteer work. Your construction background would probably be great for Habitiat for Humanity or the Peace Corp.

I would first try and figure out if this "depression" is money related, marriage related, age related, health related? Or, possibly, all of the above.
