My cat wakes me up every morning at 6am and will not leave me alone until I get out of bed. He always has food and water...I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem? Does he just think I've had enough sleep?

Mine sticks that ice-cold nose into my ear while purring loudly every night within a few minutes of 3:45 a.m. She has everything she needs but companionship. She ignores me most of the time when I'm up, but gets very lonely whenever I sleep or otherwise stop worshiping her. Typical woman...LOL!

She's a pink-nosed Calico named Mary Jane Sh!thead. Long story, old girlfriend wasn't exactly an animal lover. Guess which one won out?

Update: I reread my comment. Am I the only guy here? And straight to boot? How embarrassing! Sorry if I invaded anyone's turf.

It took months for my kitties to get into my routine. They just did not understand that I don't need to get up early on the weekend! One of my cats used to wake me up by sitting on my chest and licking my face. One day the alarm clock went off, and I shot out of bed suddenly to turn it off, and...well, he went flying and has never done it again! I didn't mean to do it, I felt bad, but it worked! Now he licks plastic to wake us up. We had to close the bedroom door for a while, and gave him a window perch. Now in the morning he loves to sit in the window to watch the birds and sit in the sun. They also know what "No!" means. If they do not respond to the word immediately I make a loud noise, like clapping my hand or dropping a stack of magazines or using a shaker can (soda can with pennies).

As for WHY do they do this? Mine did it because I fed them in the morning, but they can also do it because they are lonely or bored. Try excersizing him before you go to bed...or cuddling with him. Sometimes when my cats beg for attention my boyfriend over-cuddles them until they get kind of irritated and go away. Hope this helps!

my cats do the same thing. first they will run all over the room and jump on the bed and fight each other and when that does not work they meow right in my face and paw me. They always do it right as the sun is coming up. I think it is sparked by all the birds waking up and while we are human i don't think that cats really understand that we are not like them and need sleep and think that we need to be up to meow at the birds and the sun. I think it is an instinct thing.

I understand it's not an uncommon problem, though not every cat is like this. Both our cats regularly get up when our radio alarm clock comes on at 6:40AM each morning, (except weekends). When they were kittens, they wanted us up at that time "every" day. After waking them up every time they went to sleep on Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings, they have finally learned to let us sleep later on weekends.

I have 3 cats. The two younger ones have learned from the oldest that i get up early every day...they all take turns walking on the bed...fighting and thumping their tail on my legs...when i get up they are patient enough til i have my coffee...then i feed them...make sure they have water and they stay out of the way while i get ready for work...loud noises work great for deterring a cat...the littlest one is still learning not to follow me around as i get ready...she usually ends up getting a blast from the hair dryer...

cats are night animales, not he doesn't think you had enough sleep he just wants to play with you to get some effection from you.
if you don't want him to wake you close the door so he wouldn't be able to come in to your room, or if you chose not to close the door like i do just ignore him put your blanket on top of your head and try going back to sleep.

I think he thinks that 6 a.m. is an ample enough time for you to wake up in the morning. Heck, that is the time I get up in the morning.

my cat does that every morning. at 7am he jumps on the bed(all two stone) climbs over me, (or walks up my body, whatever mood he's in) and starts breathing down my ear and licking my face. sometimes purrs and meows as well. cat's are very loving, but also very selfish! gotta love em.
