How do I deactivate/reset the alram on a 1995 VW jetta?

the alarm still goes off after trying to reconnect the battery properly

To turn it off once it's activated, you have to put the key in the driver's door and turn it to the front "unlock" position.

The alarm goes off as an anti-theft feature, batteries do get stolen.
