I am a military spouse so we move every few years and it is expensive to buy the extras like curtains and rugs every time so we make due with pictures and linens. We can paint if we would like to but have to return the walls the way they were when we move out so we only paint a few walls for accents or small rooms to avoid the white hospital feel. I know when we buy a home I will most likely go overboard and want to do it all but all I need is here now.....a home and my family all the rest is just material things we have and can do without. Most of our decor is just knick knacks we have accumulated from holidays, when we lived on Cape Cod there was a place called Christmas Tree Shops and despite the name they carry themes for just about any style all year round that were relatively inexpensive. We bought little pieces to fill shelves with to look nice. My favorite decor is the things my daughter has made. I went to home depot and bought some moulding and made a large frame on the wall to display her pictures and crafts from school. Not only is it bright and interesting she loves to put new pieces of her work on it. I guess it is like an expanded version of the pictures on the fridge. What I am trying to get at is you have to decorate to make your heart happy, if you put a beautiful room together but it says nothing about you and your family then it is just decor. If you please yourself and your loved ones with beauty as you see it you will love to show off your home no matter how "in style" others may think it is. When we do buy a home it will be filled with a frame of 3,4,5and soon 6 year olds works of art, Coast Guard memorabilla and tons of family pictures that I have snapped and put into collages of pictures and tickets and shells and stones scrapbook style in shadowboxes. I will happily paint every wall in the house though and hopefully recover our couch that has been through many kids sleepovers, several puppies and lots of company!!!

No! I was just saying last night, I hate my house!!

I feel like I have good ideas but in fruition, still not practical or homey feeling. I can't afford a designer and I don't have any homosexual male friends. I live with my husband, two other male roommates, two medium sized dogs and a cat. Can you imagine?

I hope someone posts a good resource for the "design challenged"

My new year's resolution is to have only what is functional and beautiful in my place. I am getting there slowly but surely. When I'm there, I will be completely happy in my house.

i'm happy with the way my ROOM is decorated. the house...thats a whole 'nother story! my mom's house is clean and SPOTLESS but it doesn't have any decoration. but my room (everything is black and baige). like the bed board is black, and my blanket is black, the curtains are black, my computer desk is black, and my stereo system is black. but the color of my tile floor is black AND baige, and the sheets to my bed is baige too, the rod for my curtains is baige also, and my lamp is baige. i have little vases sitting on my computer desk...they are all black and baige. and my clock is black and baige too!
too much details?
my whole room matches! hehe!

I am not even satisfied with the design of the house or the layout of the rooms.

It is getting there slowly but surely. Having 4 kids and 4 pets doesn't help much.
