Unlike the rest of the aircraft, which is mostly made of light materials such as aluminum and plastic, the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder are encased in stainless steel boxes roughly 10 inches by 10 inches by 5.
The steel is maybe a quarter inch thick and the boxes are so heavy in consequence that the designers don't even bother enclosing the accompanying electronics, which in a crash generally meet the same fate as the passengers. As an added precaution, the boxes are lined with a liquid-filled foam bladder encased in plastic that's supposed to protect against the intense heat of a post-crash fire.
With any airplane crash, there are many unanswered questions as to what brought the plane down. Investigators turn to the airplane's flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR), also known as "black boxes," for answers.
Conclusion: “A plane built to black box standards would be so heavy you'd have to drive it rather than fly.”

If the black box is made of steel to protect it, if the aircraft were to be make out of the same material. The body alone is too heavy to fly. Let alone people, cargo and fuel able to be carried by it.Also, the black box is in the aircraft whereby during impact the external body absorbs most of the impact already. That's why it is not so easily damaged.Even with using the same material to protect the black box for the aircraft, it doesn't ensure the aircraft will never be damage if it were to face accidents. =)

First of all, this question isnt funny anymore. We all know the joke, just stop it. Its worse than any jokes involving the planet Uranus.
Answer is simple. Because then it would be too heavy to fly. The black box is made out of like, really thick metal of some kind, and the rest of the plane is made out of plastic and aluminum so it can fly. its a giant coke can with wings.

Why don't they build ships out of styrofoam and then they would never sink ? It doesn't matter if the plane is not damaged if it hits the ground at 500 MPH, all would perish anyway !
